Hi' Guy's

I've got fx5 running on my 4x2x2 and was thinking of getting an additional filter , doing this for a couple of reasons:
* if the fx5 breaks i have a backup
* allows me to add more Bichir's to my tank:)

I was looking at the 2075, has anyone used this ? Worth the money ? i could probs get another fx5 for the same price but open to suggestions:)

Ta Ben

Well I cant tell you about the 2075 but I have the 2073 and 2080.

I can find little to fault either of them. I really like the way in which the hoses are disconected from the pump head when you need to clean the filter. The filters are nice and quiet, easy to clean and reassemble and they should prove to be nice and reliable. I dont think that the 2073 I have is all that powerful though and probably wish I had bought a 2075 instead. Only other thing I can think of is that priming them can be a little tricky at times but I have a cheat for that now.

As to them being worth the money it probably depends how affordable you find them as they arent that cheap. Price wasnt so much of an issue as having something good and reliable so thats why I decided to buy them. I already owned the 2073 and when looking for another filter I could have got myself an fx5 for a fair bit less than the 2080 but I read about a few problems people had had with them so decided to stick to Eheim.

Hope that helps a little.

as i'm sure someone like dave oddballs (something like that) will say is that there is a lack of power from pro 3's in comparison to the fx5. i have had eheim externals and just ordered a new 2028 pro 2 and i cannot fault them quite and reliable never had any issues with my 2224 and looking forward to my new one. if i was in your postion i would go for a pro 3 even tho and correct me if i'm wrong i'm pretty sure alot of fish keepers have purchased the new pro 3's and said they are not as good as the pro 2 series. i can't remember where i heard that so don't ask me but i know i have read it on other forums a few times.

I had a look at the older ones but none seem to provide much flow, the newer ones seems to be alright but cost more, i had a look the 3e ones but there doesnt seem to be much difference in the actual filter side of it .
the 2080 has the best flow but seem to cost alot once you get the media set with it as well. ive seen the 2075 on ebay new for £150 which seems pretty reasonable.

I have the 2078 and the flow blows the fish away on full power, but you can turn it down. I wouldn't buy anything else now. It's brilliant and worth the extra £s

Cool i think i'll save the little extra and get the 2078 :) thanks for the advise guys.

i have 1 fluval fx5 and 2 eheim pro3 2080's on my 7 footer, from a reliability point of view, i feel i haven't had the eheims long enough to comment, but one of the 2 was a little tricky to prime, they do lack the output of the fx5, but if it is reliable filtration you want / need then up to now i can't fault the eheim. if it is filtration and more water circulation you need / want then id say get a second fx5.
wherever you look for reviews they all mention faults with the fx5 and the reliability of the eheim, but having had a couple of fx5's and the couple of eheim 2080's i have now i can't say the reliability of either differs too greatly. if i was to buy another big filter, it would be another fx5.
i don't find the eheims any easier to clean or maintain than the fx5 and as i said the flow rate of the fx5 far exceeds that of the eheims.

Ahhh decisions decisions! Depending on the snow i was going to drive to Penrith who have an eheim dealer and drab a 2078 as theyre cheap there at around £220 but i dont think that includes the media. My FX5 is fault free so far too and i brought it second hand on here so not sure on its total age but no faults. The filter is doing it's job , the pipe on it's alittle annoying due to the sheer thickness of it but apart from that mines been working fine. The 2078e is tempting me with the electronic side of it. it's rated for a 700litre tank, that along with my fx5 will give me 450litre tank some serious filteration:)

Do you notice any more noise coming from one more than the other dave?

I did notice the flow rate was less on all of the eheims but theyre rated for the same tank volume so presumably they filter better than the fluval?

well, as i said i have the 2 2080's but assuming they are the same but smaller, the fx5 does up to 1500 litres and the 2080 does up to 1200 litres. I assume the 2078 does less than the 2080. There fore it makes sense that the fx5's flow rate is greater. If you can get a eheim 2078 for £220, on ebay you can get a brand new fx5 for less than £130 posted, there is no competition in my mind!
I got these eheims with the tank, other wise id have 3 fx5's. The pipe is thicker, but this probably aids in the greater flow rate. The fx5 is supposidly 'noisier' than the eheim range but i find as long as the actual fx5 filter or its pipes arent touching the stand then there aint much noise. Its up to you really, if you want to try an eheim then go for it, if you want to save a bit of cash for a few extra bichirs then get the second fxl ;-)

Was going to get one this morning but we've had more snow so wont be able to get to the shop, gives me more time to decide though , the extra cash saving frm the fx5 is good but looking at the wattage they'll cost more to run

I have an inline water pump that I sometimes use for water changes, i just stuck the outlet hose of the pump against the inlet pipe of the filter and the power of the pump forced the water through the filter.

I brought a maidenhead aquatics own which was £145 but couldnt get it into the tank due to the poor design so i've taken that back and just orderd a Eheim 2078e the flow rate is pretty good on that at 1850lph plus it uses max of 35w electricity and can be turned down to 10w which is also handy :)

Got the 2078e today, it's very quiet and easy to get going , i've already got the speed rates set up so it go's full power at night and not so much in the day.

I had to cut a hole in my aquarium lid to get the intake and outtake in but apart from this im well happy:)
