Thanks TTA.  I do like to keep my water clear (didn't know that was what 'turbidity' meant)!
I also realised that the Eheim fine filter pads are actually floss anyway, not fine sponges like I thought, so I've already got one and may as well use it!

Does anybody think that Ehfimech is really worth it?  (or any equivalent loose mechanical media)
I've read that they're good for breaking up the water flow but not sure if it makes a huge difference.

When I bought my Eheim canisters, both came with the media included. Initially I set them both up in a similar fashion using all their media. Over time I decided to change one filter's setup, I replaced the ceramic noodles with AquaClear sponges. I am equally happy with both loads.

I do actually cut a second floss pad for these filters and run it under the Eheim fine pad. When I clean the filters I chuck out some nasty floss.

Gotcha.  I guess the extra floss helps the Eheim fine pads to last longer.  How often do you replace the Eheim pads?

I clean mine every 5 months or so- but now neither is the sole filtration on the tanks where I have them.

Usual rule of thumb, you don't replace them until they are falling apart i.e when rinsing them in water bits start to fall away in your hands or some people replace them after medication or death of a fish just incase of disease's.

Okay thanks for all the help and advice!
