Is an eheim classic 2217 too much for a rectangle ~180L tank?

"The Eheim 2217 Canister Filter has a compact pump coupled with a large volume canister for filter media. The filter is for aquariums up to 159 gallons with a maximum pump performance of 264 gph and delivery head of 7 foot and 6 inches. It is extremely quiet, durable and long lasting. It provides high pump output and effective use of filter media for fresh or saltwater aquariums."

I don't think you would have to worry about being to small.

I think they were more worried about it being too much for the tank not the other way around (unless i have missunderstood you :) )

I have the eheim 2026 in a 180 litre tank, which for my stocking is just fine. The 2026 does filters the tank 3.5ish times per hour. A lot of experienced fish keepers on this site recommend a turnover of over 5 times per hour. Your tank is about 48 US gallons, so according the text in the last post, that would be a turnover of about 5.5. Therefore would be great for that tank, and not confine you to less messy fish only!

Now, when I first put my eheim filter in, I thought that there was a bit too much movement in the tank for the plants and fish that I had, so i drilled an extra set of holes in the spray bar. This shoots the water off in multiple directions, and reduces the overall impact on a more concentrated flow.

Hope that helps,
Squid.
