Does anyone have an effective way to tell the bioload of a tank? I am giving away some of my fish and would like to know how many I can still have in the tank.

Could you give us the tank size and what you have in it, and what you are giving away?

Body mass, for instance, you could probably fit ~20 Neon Tetra bodies inside the body of a ~10cm SL Hoplo Catfish.

Stay:
4 adult platies
1 adult male guppy
2 blue fry
1 loach
1 black fry
5 neons
1 juvi guppy male

Go:
1 juvi guppy female
1 half black guppy fry
1 cory
2 guppy adults, female
1 orange mottled fry
9 blue platy fry
1 adult platy male

Measurements for the 20 gal tank:
23 and a 1/2 inches for the base
12 and a 1/4 inches for the width
14 inches for the height

Stay:
4 adult platies
1 adult male guppy
2 blue fry
1 loach
1 black fry
5 neons
1 juvi guppy male

Are these the only fish that are and will be in your tank?
If so, read on. :)
Seems a fine stocking to me.
Cept for 3 things.
1. What species are your two blue fry?
2. What species is your one black fry?
3. What species is your loach?

Once you clarify those three fish we can fully determine your tanks stocking. :)

Oh, sorry! The two blue fry are platies, the loach is a Chinese algae eater, and the black fry is a guppy.

I would get rid of the Chinese algae eater. They get big,(5-6") stop eating algae, and start eating slimecoat. They can become aggressive fish capable of killing your other fish when they get older. Then instead of giving away the cory, add 5 more for him to school with and your stocking should be fine :)

Oh, sorry, five cories will be staying, the  one cory will be given away.
