well i have just set up my very first tank with sand. i had read topics of people stating that over time, if the sand just sits there, it can develop anaerobic pockets which can be toxic to the fish. since my tank was going to be a cory species tank, i wasn't too worried that would happen, but decided to not take the risk. i had read that malaysian trumpet snails go through the sand to prevent anaerobic pockets. the only problem was that i had no idea where to get them.

well the other day, i had remembered that the petsmart by me used to have those types of snails in some of their tanks. sure enough, i dropped by after school today and they had them. the first employee that i asked said that they sold them, which i thought to be strange. they look more like pests in the tank. when he asked one of his managers, she replied, "no, those are free!" oh it was a great day for me. so i got a handful of malaysian trumpet snails for free from petsmart. just passing the info along to anyone else who might be able to get some free mts! much better than having to buy them over the internet!

these guys soon take over your tank.
ive changed from
s.a cichlids,
to marine,
and now for 6months to african cichlids,

and ive still got some!!!
god knows how they survive but they manage. not to mention ive seen some pretty large ones =P
and yes i know what they are because they constantly dig and i researched them on the net ;)
grats on your find though! they keep the gravel nice and stirred up=D

Yeah, typically the petstores will give away pond snails, pest ramshorn, and malaysian trumpet snails. They're pests that come in on live plants and are hard to get rid of.

I've got some pond/ramshorn snails from chain shops to feed loaches before.

Who wants to send me some? I had loads but when i changed from gravel to sand i couldnt be botherd to pick them out so there all gone (I was pritty exhausted).

I've read a few stories of people setting up a atank with old gravel/sand and finding these guys again. Do you still have the old gravel? Look through it for some, maybe you'll get lucky. :)

Unfortunatly i ditched the old gravel into the garden waste, weather like this it would of dried up within an hour or so :(

I got a few free from my Really Not So LFS...Don't mind if I get overrun with them, as they're more good than bad. Don't see why people are so worried about a few snails. If you don't over feed your fish, and produce tons of food for them [the snails] then they won't get ''out of hand''.

except if you are running a densely planted tank. Then its almost impossible to limit their food.

I have MTS I think. They are like Micro MTS a big one is about .5cm long, most are around .25cm though, the little ones I call sand. The cherry shrimp can even pick them up . I use to hate them and did every thing I could to get rid of them. In the end I gave up and now they are considered part of the tank.

I just bought a load off ebay, pennies to buy as there so common.
