I have strongly coloured black gravel in my tank, a non-natural type (i forget the make), which i bought having failed to do my research. I read yesterday that these gravels are sometimes coated in plastic and after plenty of gravel vacuuming and general wear and tear the protective coat can wear off resulting in toxins from the dye getting into the water. Any info/experience? Is this manufacturer specific? Do i get it out now? Is this info out dated?

if the gravel you read about is the gravel you have, then i would say take it out. if you are unsure, try to find out somehow.

The gravel i have is dyed gravel, the book didn't mention a specific make of gravel, but the book is also quite old...
If it was a common problem i would guess i'd have seen it mentioned on here.
I don't want to change the gravel if the problem has been rectified by fish companies.
Anyone with experience of or who has heard of this problem?

i've heard of coloured gravels leeching over time so you just end up with white gravel, however weather what it leeches is poisonous or not i can't say
