Well... to be truthfully honest, I don't know what the best age is to buy 
The ones I usually see in LFS I guess (by size compared to my own babies) are about 6 month.
There's not a lot of info on how long they live for in aquaria but I've read that some had been kept to about 5 years. My original bought ones have been with me for 3 years so far.
