This thing sounds like a good piece of kit, I carefully siphon the poo and crud from my sand substrate only to find the next day or so a load more has been washed out from the rocks or where ever.

Will it siphon up the poo from efficiently from a sand substrate ?

Nick my substrate is crushed coral sand but it works a bit like the python ie swirl it above the sand and the poo rises. If the sand starts to go up lift up slightly away and it falls back down. I never worried about losing a bit of sand tbh and if you've still got your playsand then it's cheap to replace plus it would take a lot of vacs to remove a significant amount that you'd notice. How was your hols?

The thing I dont like about those (and i have a mains hang on the side one) is the circular hoover tube. You continualy have to put it down, wait for it to suck all the goop out and then pick it up, wait for the gravel to fall out the pipe and put it down somewhere else. It takes hours to do my tank!

What we need is a little unit you can roll accross the gravel with big sponey rollers to keep the suction localised...

That's one of the advantages of sand :) it's quicker.

Hi- I'm so intrigued by this discussion of this "dustbuster" type of vacuum that now you've got me considering one. I'm also finding this "siphon vacuum thing with a long hose" that you hook up to the sink which you're supposed to be able to use to fill your tank with water!! How are you supposed to treat the water then? It sounds seductively simple using hoses instead of buckets but I'm suspicious. Anyone have any info or experience with this one.

You mean a Python Siphon , they are great I`ve got one.
I put the dechrlor into the stream as I`m filling.

How do you judge the mixture right by adding to a flow of water from a tap??? :(
Surely you cant get the de-chlour mixture right?

does it run on AA batteries?

Yes 4 of them and its fully submersible.

Im interested by your comments on fully submersible as I note on their web site it says suitable for tanks up to 60cm deep. My tank is 75cm. Would I be able to submerse the unit below water then to reach the extra depth? :look:

Like I`m sure most people do I put the required amount for the water change in at one go either at the start or end of the water change.
When dealing with a large volume of water I doubt it makes any difference at all.

BTW I`ve lost count at the number of threads discussing the dechlor/Python thing.

I should imagine that quite stressful for the fish, Surely dumping a load of dechlor in one go and then adding loads of untreated tap water is worse than mixing the right quantities together and then adding pre-treated water to the tank?

I dechlor all my tanks at the end of a water change, doesn't make any difference if I dechlor or not, some people have tried it and found that mature tanks that were water changed with tap water didn't have any problems.

I pretty certain it doesn`t have any detrimental effect at all. Infact some people with large fish house systems (and LFS`s I imagine) use no dechrol. at all.(not something I would do)
Prime is completetly safe and can be safely "overdosed" the water is aerated as it goes through the Python in any case which drives off the chlorine.

It`s not a case of "dumping a load of dechlorinator in at one go" we are talking 5ml for 250 litres !!!!

I think you`ll find most people do it this way.

Yes you will just have to put your arm in slightly I guess being so deep. Mine is 69 cms deep and I don't have to put my hand in very far.

Also re the dechlor. I use a pond dechlor and for the water changes I do ie 20% I only use around 5-10ml so not exactly a large 'dump' of dechlor.

My hoover is one of the mains powered ones that hangs on the side with a hose. I suppose this is a similar thing but is maybe abit more spontanious, you see some poo and you can suck it up there and then instead of bugering about with hoses and impellars and pressures.

I still find it takes ages to hover the whole surface...
