Not really fish related per say , but how does everyone manage to avoid dry hands im only in my 3rd month of fish keeping and with 2 fish tanks my hands are severely dried . I constantly need to keep sticking my hand to pick up floating plants or whatever the case not to mention water changes and redecorating once in a while. I tried to use lotion but its useless considering in a few hours after application i go to the sink to wash off to stick my hand back into the tank.

how have you all managed??

I attached a pic of my hand this is WITH lotion on it constantly burns and always flaking and red even my nails have slowed growth.

Never noticed a problem but then I don't wear gloves when kayaking (wet for hours, intense sun, salt). I think overtime your hands will toughen up a bit. Some people use long sleeved gloves but I find gloves more of a bother than they are worth.

Most people don't have a problem with dry skin from fish tanks but soapy water and alcohol based hand sanitiser will dry out your skin. Cold weather can also do it.

You could wear a pair of rubber gloves and that would stop the water getting on your skin.

I use olive oil on my hands after I wash them. Just rub a bit of olive oil into your hands while they are wet, then wipe it off with a paper towel. This leaves a thin layer on the skin and helps stop the skin cracking and peeling.

Caution, don't touch your eyes when you have oil on your hands because it irritates your eyes.

I don’t have an issue with dry hands after fish tank maintenance, and I keep a saltwater tank!

Maybe it’s not the fish tanks? Is it cold where you live?

There are a lot of things that can dry out your hands.

Wear gloves and by right you shouldn't be putting your hands into your aquarium too often as you will pollute the tank if your hands are not clean.
Or if your hands are having soap, lotion or any chemical, you must not put your hands into the tank.

Just clean your tanks from plants or redecorate them "only once a week" during your water change/maintenance time.

If you really need to, use a pair of tongs or wear gloves to pick up the plants.

Lastly, you might be sensitive to certain soaps.
Change your soaps and use special soaps for sensitive skin or use soaps that have moisturiser in it.

By the way, you have cute hands. LOL

No i live in kuwait . Im thinking it might be the chemicals or something that I’m using? Maybe im sensitive to them it literally burns after i stick my hand in there . Not to mention that as soon as i do all the fish nibble on them 😂🤣

Most anti bacterial soaps will make your hand very dry. And some may be too strong and can cause problems for your skin.
It's better to switch to other type of soap.

I've also been frequently using anti bacterial soap due to the Covid 19.
But my anti bacteria soap has moisturiser in it.
So, its ok for my hands.
By the way, I also use gloves very frequently.

You can also use "soap free" type of hand wash but they are more expensive.

Also, its best to see a doctor as you may have allergy to the soap that you have been using. The doctor may give you something to treat your allergy.

Yea ill try that maybe it is my soap. I just attributed it to the tank because its the only new variable.
Thanx anyway
