Hi there,
I was at my local lfs today and caught a glimpse at some double tail guppies they had there. I was just wondering if this was a common thing or a rarety like in bettas?

They were pretty impressive and very colourful!

Do you mean actual doubletails or lyretails? I have a lyretail if it helps and I have a picture somewhere if that would help.
I can find lyretails easily and have had lyretail fry.

Ummm... pass lol

I think they may have been lyre tails then!

They were like a double tail betta, but the tails were further apart and there was like a bridge inbetween joining them. The lobes of the tail were rounded not pointy.

Not good at describing tho sorry!

ok it was the same basic shapes but.....

take the pointy bits on the tail, fan them out, shrink them down and round them off. Then take the bit that joins the two and make it smaller.

I have no idea tho.... looks like a good excuse to get a new tank and ....

Sounds like a Lyre-tail to me, as all the things you mentioned can vary depending on the fish. Though if you do see them, I'd snatch some up. They aren't very common (around here at least). And they are gorgeous little fishies.

That page has a variety of guppies on, might help.
It does sound like a form of lyretail to me.
I have one male and some fry and I love them although the male lyretail is more aggresive than the other male but that could just be luck not the breed.
I can find them in my LFS all the time though. There was a gorgeous blue male lyretail in there I was really tempted to get but it would have thrown my male:female way off!!

OK it was very much like the king cobra lace ribbon tail guppy.

Thanks xxsarahxx i'm still working on the hubby though!

Does he look exactly like that? Because to me, that doesn't look like a true Lyre-tail, just a Guppy with a chunk of tail missing. If you do get one, make sure it really is a Lyre-tail. It should be defined between the 2 parts, no frayed edges or anything. :)

A blue tailed lyretail? :hyper: Oh man I'd love one. We get lots of lyretails here but the tails are all the same yellow colours with pale blues. Next to my fancies they'd look too wussy, washed out. They are interesting fish though. My daughter likes them alot. They definitely have a clear tail section between the two longer ribbon like top and bottom sections. Some of them are beautiful! Just lately the ones here are nothing to write home about. :dunno:
