Mine arrived infested with whitespot. First time i've ever had to deal with a disease in the tank so I may need some help. How long do I run tank at 30 before adding med??

get the mes in asap, with whitespot getting to it quick is vital.

Hi Mr Williams i dont think buying online is a bad thing as long as you know your buying quality fish from a reputable breeder -

a good example is Kev at K.G Bettas . he has some fantastic fish and all his fish are top quality

just be careful where you buy next time :good:

yup i wouldn't say that no one should buy fish online by any means just because 1 fish turned up with whitespot. Stressed fish are very susceptible to whitespot.

Read CFCs pin, its the best method :good: got my fish through it with no losses.

You should see the state of the clown loaches when they arrived. Red inflamed gills coverd in white spot close to death for 5£ per fish!!!. I put these in my small 10 gal hospital tank but I had no choice but to add the tiger barbs to my main tank. These appeared fine but It seems all fish sold by this retailer (i won't name them but you may have seen an ad around somewhere on the net ;) are sold as half dead.

I think my mbu has got it but it's hard to tell. I've started adding the med already but I'm running out due to having to treat a huge tank not the hospital tank. Order a load today online.

yeah from what i know mbu's are dead susceptible to whitespot, however it normally clears up in them relativley easily too. :good:

by whitespot, do you mean ich? its brought on by stress. and supposedly once they get it they cant again. its not exactly the shippers fault. and you should say who the shipper is so that people know that this shipper should probably be passed up if anyone else has had the same experiances.

raise the temp up, do a water change, add a bit of AQUARIUM salt. dont treat with meds until the spots leave the body. after the parasite leaves the body completely then treat the tank to kill them off.

btw...clown loaches are an ich magnet.

when you orderd the fish online, how do they deliver it, they gotta b propa caution about it

I can assure you that fish can get ich more than once. I have 3 velvet swords that were in the sick tank several times but are fine now. I also have had female guppies that were cured for several weeks but got it again.
Following is my opinion based on my experience: Live bearers get ich easier than egg layers. Older fish get it easier. I have a tank full of guppies and only the older weaker ones get sick.
It's not that hard to cure but it is a pain in the neck. Especialy having to treat the whole tank with many fish that are not sick.(but probably will be if you don't treat the tank) Don T.

Ich is a kind of parasite and thus not like a bacteria or virus where you can develop an immunity to it. It can be treated and once it's gone, it shouldn't be back in the aquarium again unless you reintroduce it somehow. That's probably where the myth/mistake came from.

I have never bought fish online. I darent. I really really want a clown pleco and no LFS sell them. The only places Ive found are ordering online, so Im now with out my clown plec :(

I buy fish online all the time. In fact, the only time I've ended up with ich was from my LFS! Ya just nevah know.

Ich is a parasite that needs a living host. Can't just hang out dormant in your tanks. For ich I've tried lots of natural treatments, salt, etc., but you could lose your fish quickly to this parasite. Quick Cure works amazingly well for me. Take out the carbon from your filter. Follow the directions (different dose for tetras - I think you can't treat elephant noses - says on the bottle).

I also always feed new/sick fish with live baby brine shrimp. It's amazing what they can pull through with live food to eat.

Best,

KK

I really don't think it's whether you buy online or not. It's who you buy from. Loads of us have got ich from lfs, but it would be a bit hard to post as general advice 'never buy fish from an lfs'. Personally I trust the online sources I have used more than any of my local shops. But it is very important to complain to the seller if fish arrive in bad condition. Get in touch with them straightaway. Send them photos of sick fish. Post any dead fish back to them. I understand your reasons for not naming and shaming, but it's all the more important that you make them aware of the problem (and have to say I'm really curious here...., haven't heard of a popular online retailer whose fish are all sold as halfdead).

Hey Guys,

My name is Liam Hincks and I am the owner of splashandcarry.co.uk It disappoints me to read about companies who sell fish online with out proper care for the animal. I would ask you though not to be disheartend and not to stop buying fish online. There are many retailers out there who do not care for their fish and only about the profits. But their are others who take the time to ensure all their fish are high quality and arrive safe and well. (Heres the bit where i plug my site :)) Splashandcarry.co.uk check all their fish before sending them out and only use reputable licenced and defra approved carriers to handle the fish. As you can see from my post I like to keep buying fish from my site a personal experience whether it is me or a member of my staff you deal with. All our staff are trained and have been aquarist for many years.

I hope this helps,

Liam Hincks
