hi there everyone. getting very conflicting information both online and at a couple of local shops; hopefully you can help clarify things.
I'm thinking of getting a single dojo loach. so that's the first question, guess I'll make a list to streamline this
  • do dojo loaches prefer or need to be in numbers, or would one be fine?
  • tank size. I have a 13g tank (24 x 12 inches, L and W respectively), and the feedback is 50/50 on whether this tank is big enough or not.
  • fish size. also a 50/50 split so far. One side says that the fish gets about 4 to 6 inches or so, others say it grows up to 10 or so inches.
  • water temp. consensus is they're "cold" water fish, but while some make it a point that these need cold water, others say it's more of an option and the fish will live and thrive either way, while others say that warm water is bad for this fish in the long term.
thanks in advance,

Temp: prefer cooler water but can be in basically any water.
Numbers: I would keep them in groups.
Tank size: my bare minimum would be 30g, 20 is way pushing it
Fish size: Mine stayed around 5”, but I’ve heard them getting around 7” in captivity.

They can grow to 10 inches and do best in groups. A 2 foot long tank is nowhere near big enough for adults, who need a 4 foot tank or bigger.

They are coldwater fishes but the water naturally warms up in summer and goes cold in winter. So an unheated aquarium is fine and let the temp drop for a few months each year.

As above pretty much. They can grow to 10-12”.

They need to be in a group. Recent research has discovered physiological benefits from physical contact with their own kind… along with Kuhlies, ropefish and presumably (imo) the botiine loaches.

They’re from cold water which can reach tropical temperatures in summer. They should not be kept at tropical temperatures long term.

Growing to a foot long and needing a group, I would say a minimum footprint of 4’ by 18”.
