my fairly new betta has recently gotten into the habit of jumping half out of the water to get to food that is still in my hand lol. if i hold the food like and inch above the water he jumps out for it
its really odd lol

Mine do that, it scared the bejesus out of me the first time though, I thought I had a Jaws betta or something!

I have several who do it. All the people at the ofice love it lol. They put on quite a show..I thought about charging admission at one point, there'll be so many people in my office sometimes .

My males could care less about my hand, they're just after those pellets, but my female takes great flying leaps... usually missing the food in the process. Oh well; she's a complete scavenger and will suck lost pellets out of the gravel. Little piggy. Keeps her tank clean though.

Yah, one of mine do that, too. My friends and family get a kick out of it!

My flowerhorn will do that too. He will jump up and bite your finger and he thought it is a game. LOL It hurts because he got teeth! :D

The way I do it is, I wet my finger just a bit and then the pellets stick to it. Then I hover my finger about an inch over the water surface and they jump right up and pluck the pellet off my finger!

I do the wetted finger with pellets on it as well; I'm worried about impaling them with the tooth pick, my luck. However, if I place my finger in the water, the female will savagely attack it with flared gills and biting. If she hadn't released eggs once (and gotten breeding stipes, for that matter), I'd have sworn she is some kind of short finned male, because she has brilliant colors, is super agressive, and makes bubblenests.

One of mine tends to do it more than the other. If I accidentally drop some flake over the tank lid, he gets crazy staring at it all day waiting for it to fall on the water. I had one betta that got a bit sick (and died a few days later) after finding some flake on the lid and jumping to grab it... and *THUD* ... he was never the same since.

Also one of my german blue rams almost jumped to get some frozen brine shrimps. I also always think that these cardinal neons will jump sometime.
