Do you let others care for your fish.

Last time i left my fish in the care of anyone else i got a phone call half way through my holiday saying that most of my fish had died overnight (a couple of hundred quids worth died). Id left all the food in little containers in the freezer with what tank each one was for and what day to use on clearly marked. Unfortunately feeding wasnt the problem, my friend who dosent keep fish didnt notice that the powerhead that drives the main filter on the tank had stopped working and didnt realise anything was wrong with the fish until they were actualy dead (he thought they were at the surface because they were hungry but didnt feed then because id told him not to). I would only leave my fish in the care of another experienced fish keeper or pay the lfs to come round and take care of them now.

I had to when I went away. I left my brother to do it and I measured out small plastic bags with the right amount in each time. Worked fine although one of my sickly guppies died, although I don't think that that was due to his intervention :D

hmmmm this is a big one at the back of my mind because we may be goin to spain for 2 weeks in september.... the feedings fine my mums nervouse enought to do as told or face my wrath (same as not ringin me in the mornin before 10 cause im evil vile first thing in the mornin) its the water changes thaty would worry me it would go somthin like this

week before goin away massive waer chage gravel clean (say 50-60-%)

check list of fishes (kinda hard with loaches cause i dont see em for days on end) i would also do the tubs of food, i would ask my mum to do head counts every day

emergency phone numbers/hotel numbers incase any fish gone missin/died

pre-runs of feeding (closly watch mum puttin food in tanks)

my mum knows how much i love my tanks and would br realy scared of messin up so i think she would do a great job.... but is there any way to get around water chages short of breaking the holiday into two seperate weeks?

I'd probably trust someone enough to feed my fish (after a few practice runs :grr: ) but just the thought of anybody putting their hands IN my tanks...drives me crazy!

Almost nightmare material!

 Exactly! God forbid I have a disease pop up mysteriously after someone put a hand in my tank, I would be dead-set positive that they were the one who introduced it. I guess it's better to safe then sorry and everybody should just keep away from my tanks! :p

 I would like to see someone try to put their hand in that tank with that pretty midas you have. :kira:

Since I'm already here, I have to mean of fish to go more than a few days without feeding. If I did, they'd kill each other off, so I have no choice but to trust someone to feed them. All but one would be dead anyways if I didn 't. It doesn't make me feel any easier tough. With single cichlid tanks, if I'm gone for less than 2 weeks, I don't have anyone feed them and I let them go without. With a shoaling species or pirabha, I have to have them fed, with a single species of piranha, they also go 2-3 weeks without food before I would entrust anyone with my tanks.

I'm going to be away for a week; needless to say, I'm worried. My entire family will be gone with me, so, my fish are only getting fed twice in a week, which isn't terrible, I guess. Thank god all my fish will eat flakes, or will eat plants if they're hungry.

I let people feed my fish all the time. Younger ones with supervision of course. But other than that, I think if someone doesn't know how to follow instructions/can't watch and learn, is incompetent.

once i was on holiday, i trusted my borther to feed my fish, which he did. but he didnt close the tank properly and my frog escaped. don't know what i'll do when i go away again.

That's good! I wish I could be like that, but no-one seems to understand how important fishy stuff is, especially feeding!

I suppose people will become more interested in the hobby and then in turn want to do it properly if they are given the chance.

Hmmmm :)
