This is William Shatner, my first Betta. As of now I've got him in a 1 Gal bowl, I'm going to try and get a 2 or 3 gallon soon. Maybe even put him in a 10 Gal by himself..but, I'm not sure how well that would work.... I don't have any small filtration systems, just the built in one on our 50gal tank. Any suggestions?

A betta would do fine without a filter as long as you're doing consistant water changes and tank cleanings. Yes, I have found they do better with a filter and a heater though.

Thanks :D, any suggestions on the filter/heater to get for a 10 gal tank?

I do a 50% water change in his bowl every 4-6 days so, cleanliness really isn't an issue. It's just that I'd like to give him lots of room :D.

You can just get a pretty decently priced heater from Walmart or something. I personally like the heaters that hang on the side of the tank. As for a filter, I would suggest an external spill over style filter. The brand I'm currently using on my 55 gallon tank is a Penguin, and I've been quite happy with it so far.

Only responding to this because it concerned me really, you should be doing full 100% water changes not 50% every 5-7 days. You may get a bigger response by starting a new thread dedicated to your particular queries as they may get lost here - this thread is for pictures of sick fish lol x

I wouldn't do 100% water changes. Just becauses betta are surface breathers doesn't mean beneficial bacteria won't do them some good.

Speaking from my own experience, if the betta are in unfiltered tanks it really ought to be cleaned thoroughly each week, or else the betta can suffer all manner of health problems. Fin rot, fungus etc. Even 85-90% water changes would provide them with clean, sparkling water. This really is a must for the ultimate in longevity for these fish.

I've tried doing 100% changes.... whenever I would he'd flip out and just sit listlessly on the bottom. He wouldn't eat or move, but since I've been doing 50% every few days he doesn't get bothered by it too much any more. Though, I don't mean to clutter up this thread any more than necessary but... What about putting a live plant in his tank? What would be a decent type to put in there, and what sort of substrate would I need for it. Doubt a plant will grow well in glass stones :)

Do 50% every two days. It is the best way. Is it alright to use his picture in my movie? If so, I need your first, last, or first and last names.

Speaking from my own experience, I did 50% water changes once a week for my first betta, and he lived for five years after I got him.
