Just curious if most of you got your pets (fish excluded obviously) from a petstore or if you adopt through some sort of animal rescue organization? I just found a kitten through VOKRA (vancouver orphan kitten rescue association) and he is perfect! I get to bring him home next week hopefully.

Hya - four of our five cats are rescued (including bengals), one bird rescued, some seahorses rescued. I understand that sometimes people want a specific breed (as I also have done) but there are pedigree rescues as well. It's horrible so many beautiful/loving animals end up in cages because of faults with us not them.

I know it's always so sad when I go to the shelter, I want to take all the animals home instead of just one! All the cats I have had so far have been rescue cats.

All the animals i have kept are rescues, My Dog was a rescue (found outside the studio in the rain).
Cat was from the RSPCA
Canaries and Finches were rescues again RSPCA

Besides fish all I've ever kept is a terrier or two. I go to well screened private breeders, they had better thoroughly question me as well as I interrogate them.

We bought our dog from a breeder but only after many tries to find one that fit our needs at the animal shelters. We wanted a small (under 20lb) dog for the house. Most every one we found at the shelters were large dogs, (lab or shepherd mixes, boxers, collies, etc.). They were all pretty dogs but just not what we wanted or needed.

my cat we adopted off a women whos husband was alergic to, she ( the cat) would have ended up in a shelter) and atm i am looking around to adopt a puppy from the rspca.

I have adopted a rabbit but then we had to go overseas and so someone adopted it from me. I suggest adopting because...,
well here, my lps is caring for their animals poorly.

I have loads of rescues here, some will stay others will be rehomed but i have also bought from breeders.
Apart from Fish i will never buy any animal from a petshop

In 2 families (mine and my other halfs) we've got 4 cats and 2 dogs. 1 Of the dogs was from a shelther, the other dog from a family that had registered their dog with a shelter but wanted to keep their dog at home until the adoption. So we got him from their family home, but through a shelter. Very odd walking out with someone elses dog.

1 Of the cats is from a shelter, the other 3 were stray kittens that we've taken in over the years.

I wouldn't feel good buying a pet knowing there's so many waiting for a family/getting put to sleep. Most dogs from breeders find a home anyway, where as there's a lot of shelter animals that will never have a family. I just couldn't justify it to myself.

We adopted our dog from a Euthanasia Rescue a few years ago and she's just the most wonderful lil beastie ever  It was odd at first because clearly this dog had a muddled background and I was clueless as to what it was, so I was apprehensive bringing her home. But now we wouldn't trade her for the world.

Lately I've been mulling over getting an ACD pup from a breeder, which I'm certain I will do within the next few months. But a huge part of me regrets not adopting again instead. We'll see.

4 dogs: 1 from shelter, 3 strays from the streets.
2 cats: 1 from the shelter, 1 stray (more or less...)
4 rats: From a pet store, but being sold as snake food.

I'm definately pro-rescue. I would never ever purcase a dog or cat from a pet store or breeder, but to me the rats are different. *shrugs*

I agree that adopting is the way to go but in some cases it isn't possible. As I mentioned in my previous post, we tried very hard to find a dog to adopt. We went to the shelter every weekend for 3 or 4 months and they never had any dogs other than large ones. And we had to have something under 20 lbs for the house as our house simply isn't big enough for a dog like a shepherd, lab or other larger mixed breed.

Every pet I've ever owned is/was a rescue, whether from a shelter, or rescued from abusive homes.
