Do Not Trust Your Gps

we only use gps for when we are climbing. my dad won't use one in the car. :good:

Really? My GPS was awful when I was in the dolomites, the signal was pretty shocking at times but then again rock faces were obstructing half the entire sky lol.

Where abouts do you use it?

in the lake district. it's safer than just a map and compass when the fog comes down and you can't see anything. :good:

Yeh they're not bad at that point, never really thought they'd be any point climbing though as your ascending vertically. The only thing I use mine is the altimeter and that's purely because I can and I don't have a manual one.

Mines takes me the wrong way/play 9 out of 10 times. but eventually get you there after many pointless journeys. it also likes to try and get you to do U turns on the motorway etc. Technologie at its best

hi, when i said climbing i meant mountain climbing, so not all of it is climbing, there's a lot of scree and walking too.

What brand do you have? Perhaps we should write a mini review each and see what brands we should avoid. I've had a few where my satnav has been a douche about things, especially when it asks to do U turns, I turn that off as it specifically asks to do it in the most awkward situations.

Mines a Garmin Nuvi 255w, I've had it for about 2 years now and it's map is out of date and I'm starting to encounter problems in some areas however I usually rely on the satnav for a general sense of direction rather than absolute, a more accurate speed reading and an distance/time to destination.

Mountain climbing? I've got some Karrimor boots for walking like that, they're great actually got ripped off for them at Blacks though. However I still ended up paying a whopping £0 for them as the man "forgot" to charge me.

we go climbing once a year, but my dad said we're going to start going more often. the best one we've climbed so far is Helvellyn via striding edge, but i think we're going to climb Blencathera via sharp edge which should be fun.

have you been on the honister via feratta? we are going on it at half term.

Mines is a Binatone not sure on model, Yeh its good for a true speed which is handy when you've got those annoying avrage speed camera's even though it probibly only cuts about 1min off the journey time but then every little helps

Never done Via feratta at all, I'm a bit sceptical about how safe it is though lol. I don't like the fact the sling has some stretch in it. I'm use to a pretty stiff rope which doesn't stretch and your body takes the force of a fall haha. It wouldn't be hard to make a makeshift via feratta as I've got all the stuff but they're a bit pricey to buy. I also have problems trusting rented gear, even though I know it is supposedly checked every time before use.

Going from Northern Illinois to Cincinatti OH for a dog show, my GPS took me OFF the interstate, through the ghetto of Indianapolis in a big square, past many garage sales, crack dealers, hookers, and liquor stores, before putting us back on the interstate.
