Do Aquatic Plants Help With Ammonia A Little Bit

And just because you have a lot of plants doesnt nessicarily mean that they are the main bio-filter. Remember that some plants grow slow and therefor dont take up as much nutrients as fast as other plants. So you need your plants to grow fast, to get really fast growing tanks your gonna need to do a little extra work, high light, high CO2 levels made artificial from pressurized kits, and some sort of doing technique, EI would be the best for this. This doesnt nessicarily come cheap....

But you can also get fast growing plants in low light, but that would mean that your plants may not be the main bio-filter.
ok thanks for the tips

A very heavily planted tank will result in most of the ammonia being used rather than converted into nitrite. 2 or 3 plants isn't eough to matter. They will use a very minute amount but that's about it.

well i got some zeolite and put in my filter cartridge
I would strongly suggest removing the zeolite ASAP. It will absord ammonia and remove it from the tank and prevent your tank from cycling as there will be no food for the bacteria. It also has to be changed or recharged every so often so you will have to test your water daily to make sure the ammoni isn't starting to rise because the zeolite is saturated and not removing the ammonia. You will be dependent on it from now on since your tank won't be cycled and it will be your only method of ammonia removal.

agreed, bacteria is free and safer, zeolite is not free, is not as safe as bacteria, what if you run out and a snow storm hit and all stores are closed...., and its just a pain.....

carbon does literally nothing.
only should be used when taking meds out of the water. other than that its a wast of money

lol.... ok then

carbon is great to have, does its job just fine, problem is, doesnt do it job for long, they get exhausted fast. They take out meds, they take out stains in the water, they have loads of room for nitrifying bacteria, but they get exhausted fast so they dont work for long.

they work from 24-48 hrs in the tank.

true but it really depends, in pure RO/DI water it will do the opposite and leech stuff into the water, in tanks with a lot of nasties it wont last long, it also matters how much flow is going through it, is there any bypass etc.

i heard purigen is kinda like carbon except its better(somehow, forgot why xD) and you can renew it with bleach
