Your best bet is to cram some cermaic media (or basic filter sponge) into your filter, don't bother with carbon, or any of those special bags of 'nitrite removing' or 'ammonia removing' filter media.
Plants do help water quality, by adding oxygen and using up some of the fish waste as food, but you can't rely on them to do the job of a filter. Cycle your filter (keep up with the water changes) then look to add some nice easy to grow plants (you will need a light in the lid of your tank though) that will not look pleasant but provide some over for the fish and help oxygenate the water.
