im interested by the thought of building my own tank but don't know where i could buy sheets of glass. and also how much do you reckon id pay.

There must be lots of double glazing firms around, try asking those blokes where they obtain their glass from. I work as a glasscutter in a glass factory. We have a trade counter. Is there a glass factory near you or a buliders supply merchants, they too will have a glass sales counter.
