I don't know FM, the thing BTT did was in response to not wanting to spend as much as the Python parts are I guess. I bought my Python before I knew all that much about it and might have made my own if I'd seen a DIY article like this. In my case I don't really use all the Python parts anyway, I just use it as a glorified simple siphon. I just put the exit end in my catchbucket in the bathtub (in winter, otherwise out in the garden in nice weather) and in the tank I simply get some water into the cylinder, lift it up high and then quickly put it back underwater to get the siphoning going. Then I gravel clean with water flowing to the catchbucket. When my cleaning has reached my goal I lift the cylinder out to stop the flow and balance the cylinder at the top of the tank (not underwater or sometimes it spontaneously starts siphoning again!) The I go to the other end, take that end and attach it to the brass converter that has threads the fit my bathroom faucet. The brass converter was the thing that for me was most valuable about the Python exerience, they had all sorts of converters including one that fit my rather odd modern faucet and that made it all possible for me to simply fill my tank from the faucet, so to speak! I also like the fact that I can grab a cup of recently removed tank water from my catchbucket and put it at the sink to temperature match with my hand going between the cup and the faucet. The single-lever faucet allows me to set the temp like this -before- I attach the long water hose to it and then when I lift the lever I know the water shooting down the hall and into the tank will be the right temperature. I always do one last double-check that the cylinder is positioned carfully in the tank before I turn on the distant faucet (don't water water all over the room!)

OK i was only asking cos a friend wants to know if you could make one.

He's just saying that its gravity that makes a siphon work. Just like the water would pour down to the floor if you tipped your tank over, the water will flow through a siphon tube if the end outside the tank is placed at a lower level than the tank. This is how most of us drain our tanks during a water change.

LOL yeah sorry me being blond again lol
So just a long piece of airline would work?
Ill have to try it out, take the wide bit off the end of mine and have a go ty

We need someone to state the obvious lol keeps us grounded

Just tank a tube, and place a bucket on the floor. Then suck a bit on the end of the tube, and the water should start flowing out into the bucket.

hiya :) if you want to make a syphon thats as small as airline tubing.

-Just get a 500ml bottle (half of 1L)
-Piece of airline tubing

In the lid, make a hole in the center, (with a drill0
Pop the airline tubing into the lid, just a bit, then screw the cap on.

Ataach a skewer to the end of the tubing to make it more stable. Place the stable part into the tank. squeeze the bottle ad it will create a small vacume effect. It should blow bubbles out into the water, then will suck water in.

I thought of that myself btw, then i tried it and it worked! :)
HTH :)

That is an interesting way to start a siphon Aly stahr. I just place a length of the tubing under water and let it fill, then put my thumb over the end of the tube and move it so that it is ready to run into a bucket. When I take my thumb off the end, the flow starts without threatening to fill my mouth with tank water.

Interesting but it works! :)
