Do it yourself, or should I say, Do it themselves!? My convicts made a cave! It's quite weird but my convicts somehow moved loads of sand to make walls around my tree ornament, then apparently dug down somehow to make a small crevice under it! I was quite surprised tnat fish are that smart in ways. So proud of them too! It's a little small and dark (of course the fish would try to make a cave to protect themselves, so I can't really take a snapshot. But intelligent little things they are.

Convicts have real talent for digging if they were in jail they wouldn't be for long. As for bright not to sure, a pair I had kept digging until the whole cave collapsed.

have fun keeping your tank in 1 piece

One of they great or not so great things, depending on how you look at it, on keeping cichlids. You'll either like, or learn to like, their flare for interior design, or you'll drive yourself bonkers trying to keep the tank the way YOU like it

My nic's are notorius for aquascaping, and to see the male at 10 inches scoop up sand in his mouth, and spit it back out is quite a sight. Keeping the filter nice and clear of sand is a whole other issue :S Coming home to find out my tank was redesigned used to drive me nuts, but that was a while back when in an 8 hour period, the entire 80 lbs of sand would be relocated to form a 12 inch privacy wall at the front of the tank  Since then, I've added more rocks and wood and the sand is rearranged now to make small peaks and valleys, which actually look really nice and natural. I think my tank looks much nicer this way, and besides, what do I know about proper plant placement? Plus, the landscape is always changing, without me having to lift a finger, so I never get bored of the look

Another thing my convicts seem to do a lot with sand is they make creaters everywhere! They're like small bumps in the sand, which I don't really like, so one day I flattened it out, but the next morning it was 're-aquascaped'. Guess, the tank is theirs.

Hey thats prettyneat! Mogo - I totally agree with the interior design thing! My firemouths dig up everything! even the fake plants! there are craters all over my tank, and I have to go in and fill them in and stick the plants back in the gravel so they dont float everywhere.
