I get the filter pads free with the filter (2215 classic) but the eheim media is quite expensive what can put in there instead of the ehfimech and ehfisubstrat? Preferably something cheap but just as good and safe

Pehaps other brands of filter media. You can buy all sorts of ceramic media and bioballs etc from other brand which should work fine. I use plastic bottle lids (New never used for bottles) in one of my externals but there is only a fighter (betta) in that tank and there is also a sponge attached to the inlet. I would not use the lids in a fully stocked tank as the surface area/volume ratio is not really good.

Hope this helps

gravel would do as a great mechanical media,
it would also have a limited biological media property.
try laying different size gravel,
stating with larger at the bottom and smaller at the top
interspaced with the sponges to keep the gravel seperated.

Good idea. If you have some mature gravel this would help cycle the filter too.

I would think depending on the size of the gravel it would be quite a good biological media but the sponge would be better mechanical media and easier to clean.

I have gravel in a stocking in my eheim.........when I changed tanks....and added the filter, I just put the gravel straight in......

.....tank parameters settled straight away......

It is still going nicely nearly a year later....(with one filter-cleaning session).

good luck
