There's a great article for attaching Java moss or Riccia which is pinned in the plant and planted tank section!

I love coconut shell caves , worth the effort , and , Peaches , you don't need live plants they look good either way ........a little 50 or 80 grit sand paper will remove that hairy type stuff , as well as any rough /sharp edges ........I cut 4 in half , my son and I split the caves .........

Hope you don't mind me adding some pics of mine :)

Hey lucky, I like how yours has the entrance a little higher, that's cool. Anyways, I was assured that the hairs wouldn't rot, but I'll probably sand them off just in case. I'll get some java moss when it's no longer cold out and wont die while shipping; My LFSs don't carry any :/ Until then, fake plants will do.

Hey, thats cool how you did that. I think I may do mine the same way how you did. You just drilled a big hole in there, so they can go in and out of that?

Oh, and I tried this, but I think I got like a rotten coconut. The Meat was almost gooey, and I could get all of the meat out, even after boiling for like 45 minutes. Ill try again tomorrow, as I didn't get the coconut from a gracery store where they are probably fresh.

Did your coconut have a sour smell to it? I got one that had a gooey and off color (like yellowish, but very faint) color water in it. I threw it out because it smelled bad, even though it was probably still usable.

I drained my coconut and just let it drip dry over night. But I couldn't be bothered doing anything with it until about three weeks later. So when I cracked it open it smelled fantastic and the meat had a creamy coloured layer then a lovely blue mould growing on it. Fascinating stuff. I just used a knife to take it all away from the shell but it was difficult. Then chucked it in the pan and boiled it for hours. So theres no problem with a mouldy coconut.

Nuke it for a minute (after you have split it open or you will kill the microwave and possibly yourself) and the flesh comes off much easier ;)

Nuke it, eh? Microwaves are such a luxory, I don't know how I could ever live without one ^^ Unfortunantely, I wasn't clever enough to think of that earlier, but next time I will definately give it a try. If you put a coconut in a microwave on high, no holes, how long would it take to explode? An unscored one. I bet it would take awhile. Anyways, thanks for the tip, Arfie :)

I have no idea and no intention of finding out

Is it ok if there are remnants of meat on the shell. Even after I boiled it, there was white patches of meat (very thin) that wouldnt come off. Is it ok?

I am going to have to try this someday. I have an old microwave that a friend is using now until they get a new place. If I ever get it back I think this would be a worthy experiment. I will post results here if/when I get it back. I used to drive my mother batty blowing up eggs in the microwave when I was a kid. Good times.

Sounds entertaininng enough, but I love my microwave too much to blow it up for fun.

It's probably best to get in there with a razor blade if it needs scraping that bad; the meaty stuff will probably rot over time and nobody likes a rotting coconut.

hey, looks like youv'e started off a new craze- nice one mate. Might do my own if i can be bovered.
