I am desperate to have a pair of discus fish

i have a Fluval Roma 90. Would this be big enough to keep a couple with nothing else, maybe a catfish?

Discus should really be kept in groups of 6 or more, in nothing smaller than 200 liters. Even if you only get a pair, 200 liters, a 4 foot long tank, is still the minimum. Preferably more as they are pretty large fish. I'm not sure how big your tank is, but I always thought the number was the amount of liters in the tank for fluval tanks, ultimately meaning your tank is much too small for even a pair.

scrap the bristlenose IMO. They produce way too much waste, and discus and german blue rams are both sensitive to nitrate.

I have a pair of bn with my discus and have never had any problems with the water quality. Just dont over feed them is all.

Well... what I'm going to do is stock the tank quite slowly anyway, so I'll be able to judge the levels of pollutants.

Half of the media in the filter will be from a four month old filter, so the tank will be instantly cycled for a low low population.
As the rest of the media matures I'll add small quantities of fish.

Once I get round to the discus the filter will be well matured.

That's the basic plan.

From the results of the tests on the water I can evaluate whether I can add a bn or not...

The tank comes with a 900 l/h filter in the hood, but has the pipework to add an external one, and I think I will be adding a 2.000 l/h one from the same company further along the line if I fell the need for it.

the BN isn't really necessary. If you want one cause you like them as a species, go for it, but I can tell you now, they cause a lot more problems than algae ever will. Before I had a BN pleco i the 75, I never had to vacuum the substrate cause the fish didn't produce enough waste for any poo to be noticable, and the filter picked it up over time. After adding a BN pleco to my 75 gallon, I have had to start vacuuming every single water change just to make the substrate look acceptable, and he's not even 3 inches long.

BTW my LFS is selling me an old display tank of theirs (ex marine) for £300. It's a 400 litre with sump, pumps, skimmer, cabinet, all worth over £1400 when new. WOOHOO!

I just have to check if I can get it up the stairs first

They all seem very happy here but I also have an external filter running to augment the one in the tank lid. Very good value for money and I found allpond solutions good to deal with
(no connection apart from purchases)
