Discus Tnkamates

what fish can u keep with discus would u recommend?

Nothing too fast. Nothing too agressive.

I would recommend:

Angels (one or two no big schools)
Otos
Bushynose Pleco (be careful with these though)
Apisto sp.
Ram
Bigger Tetras (Cardinals, other higher temp. sp.)

I actually have mine in with a Honey Gourami. The Discus and the Gourami don't really seem to notice eachother and both are doing really well.

It is suggested that you have a larger type of shoaling fish - cardinals, rummy nose tetras, glowlights etc as this helps to make the discus feel safer.

With my discus i have rummy nose tetras and cardinals.

I also have apistogramma borelli.

Some plecs will try latch on to your discus but most should be ok. i have L114's, L176, L182, L183 in with mine at the minute. I have had bulldog plecs in with them to with no bad results.

I kept small angels in with my discus but you have to be careful incase they start to mate. Then the problems begin. Also some people say no to Angels with Discus as Angels carry a lot of bacteria that may effect your Discus. I had no problems with this.

Another fish that some people keep with discus is Killifish i believe although i dont know much about them

Goodluck.

with my discus i kept a shoal of red eye tetras and lemon tetras and a school of clown loach however this only worked for about 5 years as had a heater electrified them all when i was on holiday

a pic of the tank i did plant in afterwards but this is the only pic i have i hope it gives you some ideas

As I have stated before, it isn't a bacteria, it's a parasite called Capillaria. It can sometimes be found in wild fish but cease to exist in tank raised fish. It normally doesn't effect any other fish but Discus, that for some reason, are sensitive to this and other parasites.

I like adding cardinals because I have heard that if you have a shy discus the tetras will make it feel more at ease and more comfortable.

how would halfbeaks be with discus???
and how would hatchet fish be??

Hatchet fish are fine. Not sure about the Halfbeaks. Don't know much but I am pretty sure these are herbavors, which could lead to dietary conflict.

they are carnivores i think definately not herbivoures

Hmmm... okay might be marine halfbeaks then? TBH I have never had any experience with these fish, nor have I read much on them. Might need another member to say yay or nay on this one.

Yep, the apisto will be fine.

I would treat the sparkling Gourami as I would Neons with Discus, and say that if the Discus are young, and the gourami too small to fit into their mouth it will be fine. As they grow they won't bother with the Gourami.
