Discus Tankmates

I think the Keyholes would be OK with the Discus, possibly with the Rams but Rams are slightly aggressive whereas Keyholes are peaceful.

jeez, calm down all! The tank is being set up from scratch; hoppybun didn't start the thread saying "can I keep livebearer fry and a crab, and..." in her post, or even say that that's what she wanted to add to the tank.
I already said in my original post that I keep rams and cards with my discus, so like you Spooky, my advice was based on my own experience; and also from reasearch. I suggested risk-free tankmates which I've never seen any reports of causing problems in the discus tank. I don't see how that's particularly offensive.
I agree that a lot of the advice in discus books does suggest they are excessively hard to keep, and that this just isn't true. However, on discus-only sites and forums, you do see pictures of clearly stunted discus (rugby-ball shaped, over large eyes) which invariably arise from people bending rules e.g. re: water changes, temperature levels, or whatever, so I don't think it's fair to suggest that they are incredibly straightforward to keep.

thats all fine and dandy mate... but my comments were not aimed at you in anyway. And im quite aware that hoppy didnt ask can I keep livebearer fry and a crab, and..." in her post, or even say that that's what she wanted to add to the tank.

However, she did ask for tankmates and i merely offered mine, as did you, so i fail to see the point you are trying to make there

I never once suggested that they are fairly straight forward to keep in any part of my replies. I did however state that they are alot more hardier than the books that were mentioned would suggest. additionally, you have seen the pictures of some of my discus and not one of them has a rugby ball shape or looks in the slightest bit stunted... but thats my personal experience !

According to the apisto geeks at apistogramma.com apistos can reside with discus. Specifically, they mentioned a. diplotaeni, a. Paucisquamis, a. Hongsloi and a. Macmasteri. They cautioned not to put a. Borelli with discus. Borelli like cooler temps.

Well, in my tank it was the other way round. My Rams are all show and no go and their displays never amount to anything. Where as I had two Keyholes at one stage and one would nip the Discus so he had to be moved onto another tank. It will vary some degree from fish to fish as they are all Cichlids. If it was my tank I'd have Discus plus one other species of Cichlid only.

I have nothing to reply to Spookys comment, I've made my point clear that I don't agree with the tankmates in that tank so I hope the original poster takes my comments on board. Research the water requirements of your Discus and choose tank mates based on these and the temperent of the fish and you'll be fine.

OK, i accept what your saying (some fish do differ) but generally Rams are more aggressive than Keyholes.
