Ok, I know im disobeying the "laws" but I have 3 discus in a 29 gallon tank, they are all babies and I will be putting them in a 55 in the next few months. Tank mates are 1 speckeld cory, 6 ghost shrimp, and 2 snails (blue mysterie, ivory mysterie). Any suggestions for tank mates now or in the future? I like angel rams, how many of those could I have?

Good advice from angelmouse, increase the number of discus and I'd also increase the number of Corys as they like to be in groups.

Don't snails require really hard water? If so someone is not in ideal conditions......

I've witnessed six discus in a heavily planted tank, not sure of the size, but there's adequate space. The fish that I reckon go well with discus are SAP's cus the discus tank has four in and they live happily together.
Read up on the SAP's before you get them though because they're sensitive to contracting diseases. The teeth of the puffers may need denistry if not given snails daily.
Just an idea though :good:

Puffers are messy eaters though, so they might not be the best choice of companion.

Puffers can be fin nippers and should not be mixed with Discus, plus you wouldn't even have room in a 55!

Planted tanks are ok for adult discus but not suitable for juveniles.

A 55 gallon is a little small... In a bigger tank Rams, Angels, Corys and Tetras are good choices. I would recommend getting at least one more Discus (two preferably) and a few more Cory (as they like to be in groups.) A small group of large sized Tetras (e.g. Red Eye) could be added. Make sure you have adequate filtration, and keep with with water changes, and you should be good! :good:

Woops. Cory and Discus numbers where already stated

BTW Puffer= really bad choice

I'm interested in Discus, but don't think I'll own any until I get more tanks and space. I agree SAP's are fin nippers, but usually only at feeding time. I won't put anything in my tank that will be harrassed or distressed :good: Why isn't planted tanks suited for young discus?

yeah they are, and like people already know puffers are known to fin nip. They have different personalities from each other too.I've seen it work though :good:

Planted tanks are not great for discus, because the gravel that you keep them in is a lot harder to clean as opposed to bare-bottom tanks.

just get a bigger tank 55g is a bit small.....
