Discus Biotope

It had my discus for at least 3 months before I saw them NOT showing stressbars. I wouldn't worry about it. Since then they usually dont show them but if they are fighting or I startle them somehow they come back for a bit.

do all discus have stress bars?? even man made varients??? as i have a couple of fish that have very light stress baring like in your sig, but a few pigeonblood varients that are bold as brass lol

The bars have been bred out of the Pigeon Blood variety but they have small black dots that act the same way called peppering. But, with the newest high quality pigeon bloods even the peppering has been line bred out. Most discus you buy in the store are strains that are created by cross breeding. None of the discus in this thread are wild varietys. Most wilds are brown or green.

of course, i would not jump right onto wilds, firstly they would be more demanding than tank bred, and the second factor was cost, these fish came from a breeder not a store..the few stores and i mean few that did carry discus had stunted fish! and were asking silly monie for them two,

the fish are settling more now too which is nice, they come out for the mrs, dont seem to like me hahaha

one thing i noticed was in the lfs the discus i saw in a display tank had tiny little black spots all over their heads, after looking on the internet, this is the peppering you speak off, luckily my fish are not displaying this, which is nice to see.
