I am about to move 5 smallish discus and feel that I need a better filter.
The tank is about 24x15x12 and I am only going to put a fine layer of gravel on the bottom.
What can anyone suggest would be suitable?
Do they need much water movement or do they prefer stiller waters?
They are very healthy and feeding well but play a lot of chasey!I am also going to keep them in the same water.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

How small are they? If they are babies, about 2", then the tank is just enough, but they will eventually need to be moved to a larger tank. I'm assuming you are trying to grow them out, so you can make it a BB (bare bottom) tank, but the thin layered substrate will also work. Just paint the bottoms and backs (on the outside of course).

What model filter will you be using?

is a bare bottom the best solution and why do I need to paint the glass?
i have a 45 gallon tank with a 7 inch oscar and a 8 inch giant gourami.
I plan to use the large tank for the discus eventually, they are only about 3 inches at the moment.
The oscar, I am trying to rehome (free) as he is a bit aggresive towards the gourami, although it is limited to a game of chasey.
It is the type or filter I am enquiring about?
Thanks for any help.

You can either paint the bottom or find a covering. I always paint the bottoms and usually the backs of my tanks, so I never have to use backgrounds. The reason for painting or covering the bottom is so that the fish does not get freaked out or disoriented having a glass bottom, but then seeing the room floor.

Bare bottom is easy to maintain when you have babies, since the fish waste and excess foods can easily be cleaned up. Plus the fish have an easy time finding the foods.

I would remove the gourami as well. Gouramis are aggressive and if they see smaller fish, they will probably get attacked.
