Disaster Strikes

Oh the joys of reef keeping, just when you think all is going well, it jumps up and bites you on the behind :( Glad to hear the loss was not too bad, but it doesnt stop you from kicking yourself *speaks from experience* :)

my tank hit 86.5 yesterday, besides the brain and leather not fully opening up to their full potential (but not actually "closed") my tank was fine. I turned off the light and turned on the AC, it didnt budge for 2-3 hours, this is a 20 gallon tank. This morning i checked and it was down to 76, phew.

think my comment of ice was miss understood, the idea of using it to get the temp down would be useless, however it deos (in time of excess heat) help to keep the temp from rising above the danger point, also as I said before the tank I used it on was only a 2 foot cold water tank but have always remembered it so that in the event i see my reef tank rising without being able to cool it, it may help to maintain the water at a temp that is ok, but take on board your figures andywg, bit beyond my mind at the moment to even bother working it out

Didn't have much time to post yesterday but here's the way things stand. As mentioned, two frogspawns are gone, as with the orange crush, another aussie acan, and half of my elegance coral didn't make it. My other two aussie acans are on the mend and looking EONS better today. Pretty much everything else is happy but I'm worried about my Orange Torch and Bubble. Both had significant recession of flesh and are no longer extending flesh over the edges of their skeletons. IME this usually leads to continued slow recession and death of the coral over the course of weeks/months, but we'll see. I'm gonna have to really stay on top of the chemistry and skimming in the next few months and see if I can't coax some health/growth out of them.

Still hurt to loose the 4.5 colonies that I did (specially since they were some of my favorites) but at least I caught it before the problem got worse. AC will not be off again for the rest of the summer so this problem won't rear its ugly head again.

Sorry bout the news ski. The weather over this weekend was brutal.... gotta love western NY. Goes from 45 and rain to 95 and clear sunny skys.

I got a little worried on friday as well. Came home to find room temp at 88 but lucky I had the ceiling fan on which was helping with evap so the tank was only at 82... but for me who normally hovers at 78 to 79... this was a huge jump. Turned the AC on that night and now things are back to where they should be.

Hope the guys left make a rebound as it would be horrible to have a total lose over something like the weather...

Yeah I know right... A week ago I was wearing freaking sweatshirts and sweaters and now I'm sweating my tail off sitting around my house in as little clothing as possible. Lame!

Sounds like South Dakota as well :shout: Even the other half of the state differs. We were on national news last month b/c the west side of the state was getting a good snowstorm (i believe 2 feet in some areas) and it was warm enough for shorts on the other side.

Ski, keep us posted with recovery :good:
