Hi all,

I have 'lost' 3 fish in the last three weeks. When I say lost I mean they have actually completly disappeared! a ballon platy, glowlight tetra and a zebra loach with no sign of any remains.

Could my gold sucking loach be eating them?

All fish will eat other fish once they're dead, so there's no way of telling really, unless you actually catch one in the act. How big is the sucking loach? Have you tested the water to make sure there are no problems on that front?

(I also feel obliged to mention that the clown loach aren't suitable for your size of tank, but you probably know that already...)

I have tested the water before and after water changes and all is well according to the tests.

Is there something I should be looking at specifically bearing in mind the disappearances?

I inherited the fish with the tank so didn't have a choice as regards species I appreciate the loaches are all going to outgrow it eventually!

The gold sucking loach is about 8" and the biggest fish in the tank, in fact he's the one you can see in my sig!

Have you noticed any aggresion from any fish during the day that might hint towards whats doing it? When are they going missing (meaning there when you go to bed gone in the morning or there in morning gone when you get home from work?) what size are your clown loaches?

I had a cory that went missing in my tank. He was a new addition. Unfortunately, we found him 4 days later (after he was first missing) floating at the surface of the tank, dead. We removed all of the decorations, disturbed the substrate, looked all around the tank (and outside it) and couldn't find him, so must have buried himself when he died and gases released later on caused his body to float.

You may unfortunately find your missing fish in the same way. Have you tried taking out every decoration/plant and inspecting them closely?

While looking into the fish I wanted for my tank I read a number of profiles of the gold sucking loach, all said they would eat small tank mates.

I've got this red tailed shark that disappears on me every night.

No matter where I look he's gone, not a sign of him.

But then in the morning, pop he's back swimming around happily.

Only place he could possibly be hiding is perhaps inside a fake rock in the tank which has a hole in. I'm surprised he could fit in it, but there's nowhere else in this tank he could hide from me.

I'll catch him going in or out one of these days.

Keeps me amused trying to spot the little so and so.

Well there is no sign of any of them although I haven't had any more loses. I have however upped the amount of food I am giving wondering if I was underfeeding!

I have 3 clown loaches, 2 of them are approx 4 inches long and a much smaller one abot 1.5 inches.

I'm thinking a second tank may be on the cards

Ha!

Finally caught him doing it.

Swam right up and into the hole while I was watching.

:)

Right well that solves that mystery then

I had a problem like this with one of my cardinal tetra he just vanished, I looked in my juwel internal filter and there he was swimming round, but a tank your size I doubt you have an internal.

I lost an other one not to long ago and via help from fluttermoth who is amazing at great advice by the way, put it down to it having popped it for some unknown reason and was then eatten by his tank mates.

I had a red tail like that, at the time we had a little spongebob house for my son in there, tiny it was and yet my 5inch retail would go in and out no problem.
