May be a daft question but do different type of BN recognise each other as a threat? I have an adult breeding pair in a community tank but I also have a maturing pair of long fin BNs and a maturing pair of 182s in the same tank they co-habit happily so far but will the different males start fighting as they get to full adult size??

I have a mature tank which is going to be home to the 182s - the plan is that the normal and long fin BNs then share the community tank tho that would ultimately leave 2 male BNs in a 180l is that going to cause trouble and how long do I have?

Any advice ??

Hazarding a guess that albino, lf, and regular BN of the same species will not be fooled by color variations.

My regular lf, albino lf, and regular peppers and bronze Corys will gladly co mingle with variations within their own species.

Thanks Jollysue, I figure the colour is irrelevant as my breeding pair are one of each anyway, just not sure if the fact the long fins are essentially a different shape would make a difference.

Plecos do not pair off like angels or discus. They will compete with each other for females as well as territory. As long as you have sufficient space for each male to have a "cave" and some area around it to call his own you should be fine.

Yes the different variations of bn will interbreed. Mine sure have.

I don't know about Plecs specifically, but I understand that spawning activity in Corys is governed by the female's release of hormones which signify and stimulate the spawn. So I am guessing it is less about fins and color than smell and taste--and behaivior, flirtation and foreplay. Some Cory ladies actually seem to almost bat their eyes when they are gravid--well if they had eyelids they would be--very cute and come hither.

Would that mean the Normal and LFs will interbreed??

I'm building a group of Sterbais so hopefully I find that out for myself at some point, they are just so damn cute

Yes. The long fins were developed from variations within the regular. Some fish will come along with longer fins. They are selected out and selectively bred to bring that characteristuc out in the offspring. So there really is no difference other than the look. As a matter of fact occasionally a long fin fry will have short fins.

Ah in that case I shall require more caves...
thanks

I have one long fin albino Plec and one with short fins. But the short fin is the offspring of long fin parents.
