Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking
on the beach
before he began his work.

One day he was walking along
the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human
figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think
of someone who would
dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster
to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw
that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead he was reaching
down to the shore,
picking up something
and very gently throwing it
into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish
in the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."

"But, young man, don't you realize that
there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.
Then bent down, picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said-
"It made a difference for that one."

We must each find our starfish.
And if we throw our stars wisely and well,
the world will be blessed.

i agree jacs  it is very very depressing. I've seen tons of lfs mix in incompatible fish  sadly when you try to tell them, they only shift them it aonther tank, where they go through another series of suffering :(

anyhow, i'm going to check otu the place nad see if he's still there. He might not even ahve made it through tonight to start.

as for waht he looked like...basically, he "tail" has been reduced to nothign but a stump, his anal fin was 80% gone, except for a small chunk left near the front of him, and his dorsal was starting to get thefinrot. if you meant his coloring ,he aws a lovely tealish/greenish color :)

the poor thing couldnt' move much, he'd try to move his tail but he could only manage a twitch and couldnt' get anywhere  i think the finrot will eventually advance to body rot..adn then he'll die.

to get an idea, he looked like that except his anal fin was gone as well :(

 that's a very wise story sorrell...where did you find it? inspiring :) i think i'm going to save it :)

To tell you the truth I was told that by my Dad when I was a little girl. I would go out after it rained and throw earthworms on to the grass so they wouldn't dry up in the sun. As you can tell from my Wal-Mart rescues, I still feel they are words to live by.

I've also heard it many times in church and I believe at a funeral. I think it's just beautiful, brings me to tears everytime I read it. :-(

ive heard that story before. it is a great one.

reminds me of one summer when i was at the beach with my cousins-one day the tide brought in a bunch of brittle stars. my cousin was collecting them in a bucket and when she wasnt looking, i threw them all back into the ocean...she was so mad at me...
she wanted to dry them and use them as decorations in her room

i think i am the queen of hijacking...

that did make my eyes go a little watery, it's a lovely story sorrell, thanks for sharing :) i think i know what i shoudl do now

jacs: i don't live near an ocean so i've never even seen starfishes before, glad you decided to throw back in the ocean where they belong, i'm sure if they could they would thank you

Hiya cotton, i think u sud go save him, uve got a heart of gold, and by the sounds of it hes in pretty poor nick. if hes there, bring him home and give him the bestest treatment u can. if he dies, your at least be able to say u tried, if he survives, im sure that he will be the happiest lil fishy you own!

ignore leck, he/she doesnt understand what having a heart of gold is all about!

if it means your mum gets cross, tell her your helping the poor and weak, an im sure she will sum how find a way to be pleased. hell, if she starts to moan that its costing a fortune, il even ship u old some better gold pellets!

your a star, and dont ever give up in what you beleive is right!

awww cotton, dnt feel bad, at least you went back for him!

(((((((((((((((Hug)))))))))))))

Aww hun, you did the right thing in going back. Don't feel bad- I know you would have saved him if you could have.

Sorrell- that was the poem that came to mind as I was reading this thread. Thank you so much for posting it.

for the future... if this happens again... I say, if he's cheap get him. If he dies; then atleast you tried.. but if it was finrot; he may be able to overcome it with the right moderation of the correct medication... always give things a try.. even if it's just for the experience.

:( i shuld have ogtten him yesterday..but i didn't, and now he's probably lying dead in a garbagel bin somewhere

i was realyl disappointed when i went there and couldn't find him..my only hope is taht someone else saw him and his condition and took him home to take care of him :( it makes me feel better that he could be in good hands at least :(

''I can't save all of them, so therefore i can't even try and save ONE? ''

i love how when i say something someone doesnt like..

theyre like

''iloveyou,thellama,leckdogg''
Misinterpretation my friend.

She means, she can't go around the world and rescue every sick betta in LFS', acting as a superhero. She simply means that by saving one fish, she will know that at least ONE person cares about the well being of another living creature, be it small or not.

so she needed to buy it so she'd feel that she cares about the well being of it ?.. thats basically what your saying..

anyways whatever..

No, that's not what I'm saying. She will feel like she did some good, she won't change her character (ex being going from a bad person to good by doing something for the good).
