i like my tank and would love to also have a refugium for smaller fish and maybe plants. But right now i have hang on filters and would like to change to canisters. However, i am planning on making a ripirum setup with some land and decreased water to about 75% and maybe some mangroves or at least fake branches to go with my archer theme.

im open to the idea of a wetdry aka sump filter and you can have a built in refugium there, but ive never heard or seen of a sump filter with a decreased water line. The overflow is always at the top of the tank.

how would one set up a riprium style tank with a refugium?

You could drill holes in your internal overflow box that can accept stoppers so you could add/remove stoppers to adjust the water level in the tank. I would still put the return at the top of the tank and use a hose or something to bring it to the bottom when you've got the water set low. If you put it at the bottom you run the risk of draining the whole tank in the event of a power outage, and I just don't trust stop valves.

Good luck!
