Hi,

I mentioned in the intro thread that I'm here to solve a mystery. My dear Sam (my little blue betta) just died last night.. Hes been healthy, active, responsive, eating, and all the other good things that a young fish should be. Thismorning i found him dead at the bottom of the tank. .. strange... I went to rinse the water out of his bowl, and lo and behold.. it bubbled. and not just the little, quickly dissolving bubbles of fish residue, but the full out thick-foamy bubbles of .. dishsoap maybe?

now, i don't WANT to believe that one of my roommates buddies poisioned my dear Sam, but has anyone else ever experienced that kind of reaction to running water into a previously occupied bowl/tank? (I should note that I've never actually used soap to wash out his bowl.. )

The water at my workplace sometimes foams a little but not a soapy foam, like BettaBum873 said. I'm really hoping that nobody would be mean enough to poison and that it's just a fluke water thing... *hugs* I'm sorry for your loss :rip: Sam

So sorry for your loss. I hope it wasnt a room mate if you find out it was...ex lax in hot choccie maybe  ?

DUDE. No way. My roommates would be dead if they did anything to harm my fish, even if it wasn't on purpose. I'm angry for you, dude. Maybe you can smell the bowl or something and see if you actually smell some soap....because you know...soap has that soapy smell.

thanks for the support guys!

I seem to recall a distinctly 'apple fresh' scent to the bubbles. (LOVE the Exlax+hot chocolate idea liz2!!) I don't think it was my roommate, he's a good guy. I think it was one of his buddies trying to be funny or something. (strange what seems logical after a few brewskies, eh?) Lesson learned: Don't leave fish on kitchen counter.

I'd move the bowl into my room and tell my roommate his buddies can't come over if they're gonna act like dorks after they get a few beers in them. Who knows what other kind of destructive crap they could pull? Some people can't handle their alcohol. That would be the end of things for me with them. Just my own thoughts for what it's worth. Makes me mad...sorry about your loss.

I did have another thought....and I hope this is the case and what happened. When I'd clean out one of my bettas who was in a glass bowl, the water seemed thick and bubbly kind of. I think his saliva he used while making his bubblenests made the water kind of slimey. I also treated the water with Stress coat which is pretty slimey too......I'm hoping this is what happened here and your betta died of other causes than death by beer-dork.

Sorry to hear of your loss. :rip: Sam.

Maybe it wasn't deliberate though; someone could have washed their hands (with soap) and then done something with the fish tank?

I am sorry for your loss! I'm really sorry as Sam is my name. If your roommate's buddy come in again, use the Exlax+hot chocolate idea on him (or her).

But two rights do make an airplane.

With all of the newer anti-bacterial soap products on the market these days you have to be real careful of what residue may be left on your hands when dealing with an aquatics situation. A few beers, and some one may have innocently decided they want to try to pet the fish.

yeah, I mentioned it to my roomie..About his buddies, he says hes going to "give them sh.." er.. heck for me. I'm not too broken up about it, I've kept fish long enough to know that sometimes, they die, wether its for a good reason or not. :/

I'd like to post a picture to introduce you to my new boy, but I can't figure out which file format the boards will let me use..

any helpers? :look:
