Dave's 65 Gallon Tank

sooo the fish store made my decision on the neons easy.... they only had 5 of them there. so I didn't get them. I did buy 2 bristle nose plecos, 4 ottos (they are weird looking though.... no black) and 6 corry cat fish. the bags are floating as I type this. can't wait to get them in. now I'm gona go figure out what kind of ottos I have..... this is all soo exciting. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Hi Dave your setup will look very nice when the plants mature and fill out, just dont rush to much with the stocking of the fish. good luck john

soo.... today marks 2 weeks since I added the plants. I had some problems with the CO2 levels. before I added the plants, I had the checker in the yellow. then I added the plants.... the first day it was green.... second blueish green, and from then on, it was sollid blue. I just couldn't get enough CO2 into the tank... I tried a bunch of different things, and finally I figured out my problem... it was my stupid filter.... obviously. It is a hang on the back aquaclear 500. and if set up right, it just shoots water accross the surface, and doesn't blow all the plants around... but like that, it just lets all the CO2 escape because of the surface movement... so I knocked the spacer off the botum, and aimed the stream up more, so it just drops into the tank. soo now all my plants are blowing all over, and one of the ferns keeps getting knocked sideways, but I have green.... I will have to get a canister filter when I have the money... the Girlfriends car died last week, and I have a shipment of birds coming in from England in a month, so our funds are really tight right now. BUT I have green again. te he.
actually, I don't know how this works, but I still have had pearling since the 3rd day after I set it up.... EVERYTHING is pearling. its pretty cool.
I did a couple of araingement chainges after I saw how stuff was growing... I moved the cabomba to the back beside the A renikii, and moved a sword infront of the wisteria. I tried to get my riccia carpet going, but I'm pretty sure I have the mini variety, cuz it went straight through the hairnet and all over the tank, so I will try again with something different in a couple of days I guess.
I did set up a carpet of lemna trisulca. it is a kind of duck weed that was floating all over my pond outside... i posted a pic of it in the riccia thread. I will get a shot of the carpet as soon as I get some bateries in my camera... and remove my embarasing attempt at a ricca carpet. ha ha. I'll get some pics on here soon.

sooo I asked on the tropical chat what kind of fish I should get for my set up and with my water specs, and they said I should rip out the plants and get african cichlids with water as hard as mine. :shout: sooo..... I don't think I'll be doing that. does anyone here have any suggestions? I put some peat in the filter to see if I can lower the hardness a bit. I know that will brown the water, and make it harder for light to reach the plants. will I have to wory about that, or will the fact that i havce 2.5 wats per gallon make it ok? hmm. I guess I gota do something to bring that hardness down, or i will be looking at beautifull plants and no fish. not really the ideal aquarium. I was thinking about tiger barbs maybe and something with a longer body to contrast them. I don't really know any more.  hmm. help?

okay, so I got the peat in there, and after several hours, I took the levels again. I now have a GH of 17, a KH of 10, and a PH of 7.5. This looks maybe a bit better? oh man. why is my water sooo hard? hmm.

soooooo.... I picked up 25 white cloud minnows yeasterday. they are in the quarintine tank, and they all look good... so far. I got them because they are soo adaptable, and I like them. soo i will leave them in the quarantine tank for a week, and if everything looks good, they can go into the main tank. I would like to get an other type of schooling fish to contrast them. I was thinking either rosy barbs, or black phantom tetras. I think the barbs might do better in my tank, because I hear they are more adaptable to hard water and cold, but I don't really know. I havn't kept any of these fish before. I hear the barbs can be pretty bad for fin nipping, and I would like to get some kind of a specimen fish at some point.... hmm. ideas?

PS I'll have new pics up by tomorow.

and that is my lemna carpet experiment. I don't know if it will stay there, or I will remove it... I'll give it a bit longer, but its kinda ugly. hmm.

Alright, so It's been just over 3 weeks, and I am starting to have some problems. I am getting black hair algae. IT is growing all over my Java Ferns and on my Amazon Swords. when I got the ferns, they were not in very good shape with a lot of holes in them. those leaves seem to have not grown, and are the ones that are covered in the algae. any new leave that have formed are nice and bright green with no spots, and no algae. should I just cut off all the algae covered leaves? it is probibley 75% of them. same with the swords... all new leaves are fine, but the orriginal ones are getting the black hair algae. I tried removing it by hand, but there is way too much, and it just doesn't come off. What would be causing it?
When I ordered my plants, I ordered my ferts too, but they shorted me the potasium phosphate. sooo I have been doseing the Potassium Nitrate and flourish, but not the phosphate... I ordered some, but it isn't here yet. hmm. maybe that is causeing the algae?
Everything else seems to be doing good. I put 25 white cloud minnows in there. they were in quarantine for a week, now they are in the main tank. they look GREAT, and I found eggs in there the day after I put them in.... they are gone now, so I guess someone ate them, but I thought that was pretty cool. my riccia carpet is growing great, but the corry cats LOVE to play in it, so I am not getting a nice bubble carpet... just cat fish playing in a bubble shower. ha ha.

Looks very nice! Keep it up. I am keeping dwarf and pearl gouramis in the same type of water that you have now that you put in the peat.......

Thanks. I was thinking about pearl gouramis.... then I was thinking about rainbow fish.... I think both would be fine... I am still thinking about it. I guess I am in no real rush to get more fish in there.... the white clouds are interesting enough for now. I definitely will add something, but maybe not for a month or so. let it settle in a bit first. and figure out what this algae problem I have going on is all about....

Looks promising :) good luck with pruning all those stems ;)

Sam
