Thanks, it was labelled up as Datnioides Undecimradiatus but I had an incling it might be Microlepsis, which I have been after for a while now

It has coloured up very nicely since those initial pics were taken,

Where did you get these

and how big isit, and how much was it?

Got it from Maidenhead Aquatics Newport, it was one of the smallest there (2-3") but was showing the most character and was showing half decent colours considering they were in a very brightly lit 4x4x2 with 2 motoros and 4 good sized andinocara sp. peru, Most of the other Dats were completely drained of colour and looked completely white, they ranged from 2-5" approx and looking at them I thought there maybe two species in the tank as some seemed to have longer more slender bodies? It was £30

Little update, I have to add, having had this fish for only a few weeks I already think this is by far the most inquisitive, intelligent species i have ever come across, (and this includes oscars) It has such a bold character for such a small young fish, especially when you consider he is currently in with a large chocolate cichlid that could probably swallow him if it wanted.

A day or two later

i have kept a couple of these through the years, and i am absolutely intrigued by these fishes. they have great intelligence like many cichlids. but they are peaceful until picked on. they will retaliate with a powerful bite if mess with by fish such as cichlids. i purchased a 12 inch specimen thinking it would be a good tankmate for a 6 inch red dragon flowerhorn. well of course the flowerhorn decided she was gonna try to bully it. but the dat turned around and said its the other way around. i had to sell the dat to keep the flowerhorn. once the flowerhorn made a gesture of war, the dat was all in. but i believe if the flowerhorn never tried to pick on it, the dat would have minded its own business. fish psychology, i guess.
