A friend of my mother's, who also happens to be our hired cleaning lady that comes by once every two weeks, got me a betta for Christmas, and cute little cat-shaped bowl to go with him! As I was setting the tank up, she asked if I used Start Right in mine.... I told her that I did, at which point she told me she never used it and her fish has been fine for years. I explained to her the importance of neutralizing chlorine and everything, so now she's going to go buy some Start Right for her fish... but that's not the worst of it.
Her fish was bought to go with one of the dreaded betta vase kits. She asked why I didn't put a plant in any of my betta bowls because, "isn't that what they eat?"
ACK! I explained to her that bettas do not, in fact, eat vegetation, and that they need to be fed. She then told me that she does feed hers... once a week!!!! :X
Well, things are all straightened out now, and she's going to go buy some chlorine neutralizer and betta pellets (rather than the flakes she was using that cloud the water,) on her way home. I just can't imagine her betta living in those conditions for over two years -_-

Edit: Here's a pic of the bowl she got me... Isn't it cute?! You can see the betta in the cat's head

don't put that speaker near it on to loud as with it that full if he has a fright he will leap out..........     :flex: :-(

Is the cat completely full of water or is it just the head? :p I can't tell...

Good thing you set her straight :)

Love that tank!! I love your phone in the background too. Everything old is new again.

Glad you set her straight about her betta. Sadly the lfs and stories in magazines and such advertise the wrong things for bettas. :(

OOOH KITTY!!!! I absolutely love your betta kitty!! I want I want... hmm I see you in in Texas... that borders Mexico.. not too far.. hehehe :p

Glad to hear you informed your mom's friend. Then she can infrom someone else and that person inform some one else and etc etc etc...

Thanks for the compliments on the kitty, I like it too :D
Yes, it's completely full of water... and yeah, I'll have to be sure to watch my music volume if I decide to leave the bowl right beside my comp speaker!

That is ADORABLE. I want one.

How tall is it? I can't decide if it looks big because of the picture or if it is. Think it holds a gallon or so?

It's probably just a little under a gallon... since I have some bettas which actually prefer half gallon tanks, I figure it should work out fine. If my gift betta acts lackluster in the cat bowl, I'll transfer one of my half gallon bettas to it and let the gift betta have a bigger bowl :D

:D the tank isn't that bad, there is room but the betta might get exhausted from traveling up to get air as the vase it quite tall. it i nice thogh, i should have a "coolest betta bowl contest" :D i dont think so thogh

Eh, the bowl isn't as tall as a 10 gallon, and plenty of people keep their bettas in 10 gallons... so he should be fine as far as going to get air goes

well sounds to me like ur average ignorant betta keeper, shes not the only one, alot of people think the same stuff -_-
She isn't ignorant. She was just not informed by people who know the true characteristics about bettas. When I started to keep fish thats what I thought that they are suppost to be in. But now that I have learned alot over the past 2 years I know that the MINIMUM is 1 gallon of water.

Is there a lid on the kitty head? Music or not, the Betta may decide to do some jumping and you'll come home to a krispy kritter.

Linda

No, there's no lid. I've never had a long-finned male jump out in my life, though, so I'm not too worried. I'll just keep the water level a little low :p

That vase is kind of cute  never seen one like that before

I would have to have a lid if I had one of those or my kitty would be taking a snack :grr:
