Cycling Finished - How Quick To Add Fish?

No, not quite the same. A cycled tank means fish can be added without the risk of ammonia poisoning, a matured tank is one that has had time to - for want of a better word - age and for all the water parameters to have settled down. That's really the best way I can put it. Some fish (like tetras) just prefer 'established' water (not to be confused with unclean). Clumsy wording again, I know; I'm sure someone else here could phrase it much better than me, but it's very late..........

all a cycled tank does is prevent nh4+ poisoning... and no2... very deadly though... so even if thats all it does... it does alot...

an established tank has enough bs so that the ph is not so much at a specific point, but mostly constant - and there is a good balance between all other paramaters, temp, water qual etc...

and dont put small fish like neons and guppies in recently cycled tanks - they are very fragile...

good luck though keep us posted...

My wifes tank has now cycled, done the water change and put in 3 platys yesterday, everything going well. They are looking happy enough. My tank has now gone to 0 nitrite after being 2 for the last few days. No problem with the ammonia dropping to 0 after I've added it within 12 hours. I'll do another lot of tests this evening and do a water change if all OK ready for some fish to add tomorrow.

How many starters for a 68 litre tank?

excellent good stuff.

that's an 18 us gallon tank roughly. so your final stocking should be 18" of fish.

I'd aim for 50-75% of that to go in once you've finished cycling, taking care not to put in any delicate fish

I've been adding ammonia to bring my tank up to 4-5ppm and then checking 12 hours later. Currently getting 0ppm ammonia but approx 1-2ppm nitrite. I've left it and checked after 24 hours and both the ammonia and the nitrite are 0ppm. Is it OK to change water and add fish once my nitrite is 0 and not add anymore ammonia? Or do I have to wait until both drop to 0 in 12 hours?

I think your OK to get some fish :good:

do a massive water change then get your fish the same day.

keep checking your levels every day for a week or so after adding fish as you may need to do water changes if you get any ammonia or nitrite spike however you should be ok.

I've done a 80-90% water change and added some fish yesterday. All seems well so far. Will keep monitoring the water too.

Thanks.
