Hiya I started cycling 200l tank 10 days ago. I have no gravel or other materials in the tank. I used kleenoff for amonia supply and got the levels to 5ppm. In the last few days I have notice this white tissue like material in the tank and the water spray bar has it in the little spray holes. Can anyone tell me what it is and whether I should try to remove it. Water temp is at 27, over head and external filter running with 900l per hour pump.I have just checked the water and the amonia is down to 0.5ppm but the nitrite is still reading nil and so is the nitrate. I have been testing every day. The tank is new and so are all the filters and filter material which are ceramic rings, active carbon, bio-balls and bio chemical cotton.
Thanks very muc gillpeo

Don't know what it is but I got some around a few days into my cycle.

It was around the same time as a cloud of bacterial bloom. It was coating the heater top etc

All gone now and not an issue. Tank cycled and stocked.

Thanks for quick reply. Best just leave it alone and see what happens

No one seems to quite know what this stuff is, but it's some sort of algae or bacterial growth that very commonly appears on new equipment, like heater suckers. It's harmless anyway, and won't keep coming back :good:

I had the same thing. I asked on the forum but noone knew what it was. It went away as mysteriously as it appeared. No harm, no foul I guess.

I had the same white fluffy stuff on my bogwood during the first two weeks of my fishless cycle. It sort of went very flat and died back after another week or so.

Now having completed the cycle ( hopefully ) there is now some algae growing!
