I would hardly class Bettas as the lowest species on fish.

Besides, the written word expresses very little emotion and leaves it up to the reader to interpret. What sounds hostile to one person may not to another.

Bettas are Anabatoids meaning they have a special Labyrinth organ allowing them to breathe air from the surface of the water. This means they can live in conditions, such as in rice paddies, stagnant ponds, ditches and slow flowing streams, which would most likely be fatal to other fish.

truth is, many of us are much more experianced than others, So weather you consider it arogance or not, we do know much more than alot of people and we are merely expressing our opinion.

1. in a paddy field, there isnt a drastic fluctuation in temp as there would be in a goldfish bowl.
2. there isnt rapid accumulation of ammonia etc in a pady field which is toxic to all fish...
3. theres a tad bit more room in a paddy field also...
4. just because it is a anabatoid, doesnt make it acceptable to house them in a goldfish bowl because they can probably survive...
Fish keeping is the ability to make a fish thrive - not just survive...

Have you actually seen how big those things are?

yeah. in the dry season they dry up and could be called large puddles, but otherwise they're HUGE.

and the water may be muddy, yes. But there would be no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, due to the huge amount of vegetation growing.

thus nullifying that argument.

Haha, I think you did!

But honestly mate, it hardly costs anything to set up a 5gal tank for your betta.

You can get them little acrylic ones.. 4gal for about a fiver, i think.. then a hydor mini heater for a tenner... dont absolutely need a filter, but you can make your own sponge one for next to nothing.

then just use any other bits and bobs you got lying around for décor.
