Ok, i have something strange going on in my tank, my platy and swordtail males seems to be getting a little friendly and i was wondering, is there anything about cross breeding, i have heard of it happening before, but surely not like this?

-_-

they can crossbreed, only ones that can though, i believe

do u have a pic? that doent seem possible though.

Well i just have my platy being very close to my male swordtails and i dont have a pic of them doing it yet, because it is very dark...

If they do cross breed, it can replace my rare fish i used to have, i had a unsual fish, a white platy, and it was VERY pretty, and i prized it most of all, but fell to dropsy, and by the time i got the medicine, it had passed away, i was indeed very, very sad...

:) I have a beautiful male swordtail/platy cross. He really looks like a combination of a swordtail and platy: longer body than a platy, but wider than a swordtail. He's a bright cherry red with black fins. I have several pictures of him if you're interested.

They can crossbreed, and sometimes do..

I dont know if someone has already mentioned this, but usually the outcome of crossbreeding are sterile fish with a shortened lifespan. :/

I wouldn't mind seeing some pics :)

Some fish can crossbreed, but like Dakota said they are usually sterile and don't live long.
wag tails are the cross between platies and swords. They reproduce and live as long as regular platies and swords.
As for guppies and mollies i have never seen it.

I have a female Swordtail/Molly mix. She's unbelievably gorgeous! I am hoping some of my male mollies will breed with her because of her lyretail fins.

I have Kept mollies and guppies for almost two years now and I have never seen one cross breed before. I'm not saying that you have't got any but i know from keeping these types of fish since the begining that I have never got a mixed breed.

I believe that platies and swordtails were the only fish that can cross-breed regularly and produce fertile offspring. Nowadays guppies and endlers can also crossbreed, and they produce some interesting looking offspring. As to the other types of cross breeds- I have heard of them happening occassionally, but it seems to be pretty chancey and rare, and I dont think I've heard of them producing fertile ofspring. I'd really like to see a picture of one though.
