Will give it ago, going to order a big tube of aquarium silicon from ebay.

I popped into Wickes today but all their silicone says not for aquarium use.

I also popped into a local aquarium shop, their tubes of silicone were £9 each so I left them! Not in that much of a rush.

Will gather the next few bits over the next couple of weeks

Silicone for the repair
100w heater
Light Bulb
API Master Test Kit

Just out of interest - I was looking around the fish in the shop, and they seemed quite cheap - lots were 10 for £7 or 5 for £4 etc which seemed alright to me, but I must have counted over 20 dead fish in the tanks - is this normal or is that a shop to avoid for the fish?

Depends how many tanks they have, how heavily stocked they are, how well decorated and how long it's been since the delivery... 20 could be nothing or a massive number...

With livestock, you really need to excersize your judgement. If it's centralised filtration and one tank has a disease, you need to ask about what gear they run, and if they give no mention of UV on a centralised system, you need to start walking

That's all above my head!

It was only a smallish shop, wouldn't like to give a guess on how many tanks there were but each tank had it's own equipement. They were fairly small tanks for the number of fish each had it's own filter.

Looking at the "rainbow sharks" - (I think that's what they were) two of them were lying dead on the bottom being pecked at by the others and another was on the filter being pecked, that one might have been slghtly alive.

The tiger barbs had approx 30 fish in the tank of which 5 or so were dead

Mr Logical to the rescue... is it worth spending on a tank that would cost less than £20 to replace with a new one ?

What are your carpets and furniture worth ? despite the loss of fish etc...

Where can I get a new one for £20?

I've ordered the silicone now - so it only cost me £6 inc postage for that, and I found a repair peice.

Another second hand tank I think Rooster means, off the classifieds section, or Aquarists Classified e.t.c...

I'd be interested to hear for anyone who has used CT1 before, it does look good, but I don't want to risk it until I've seen someone else have long-term success with it...

For a small shop, that number of bodies in the Tiger Barb tank should be noticed easily and corrected unless the staff were rushed off their feet. Did you point it out to them, and if so, what was their reaction? If not, how busy were they? Certainly, it does not sound re-assuring

Nope I meant NEW !!! Although there are some bargains on the used market - these things are so cheap now, check your small independent shops - they often make their own, "Pets at home" are a reasonable source too, I've had a few small tanks from there... just phoned my local PAH and they do a 30" for £29.99 but it comes with a starter pack of chems... which makes the tank £20 or less :good:

Bought my 4 footer for £17.50 at a DIY store as "end of range" so it pays to phone round...

The shop I went in the other day had a few ex-display tanks but they were more like £45 and weren't as big.

Will check out PAH

Rabbut, the shop had 2 staff, and only me as a customer, one bloke was shifting stock about and the other bloke was just hanging around waiting for something to happen. I didn't mention it as it was glaringly obvious

Well, without seeing the stock condition, I can't really say for certain, but it does not sound good if they were quiet and well staffed...
