hey i just plugged up 2 power filters back to back, they have the tube that runs down into the water and both of them are humming but they are not drawing water or doing anything. anyone know why? do they have to be "primed" somehow or something

as of right now the only thing i have running is like a 10gal whisper and i know its not cycling enough water. both of these power filters should work but they havent been used in a couple months.

I don't think 6 angels would be a great idea long term in one tank, chiclids tend to fight alot with each other, however what many people do is buy 6, wait until 2 pair up and then return the other 4 to the shop. That way you have a pair of angels. Just a thought.

Now with your power filters? I have no idea what these are. Brand and models would be a good start to let us know that they are. If they are externals then yes they will need to be primed.

how do i prime?? they are the regular power filter style, they hang off the back and have the tube that goes into the water. i need to get one running asap!!!

If it's the first one turn them on and pour a jug of tank water in the top and it will pull water up

If it's the second on then fill the filters with tank water in them until almost full clip the lid on and plug in should work

First; I've removed several posts from this topic, please remember the General Rules that you agreed to when you registered here.

Second; often the impeller on hob filters need a little help getting started. After filling with water & plugging in try giving the impeller a nudge with a finger, a pen or other object can be used if you have large fingers or a small filter.

Sounds like the same kind of filters I have on my tanks. Yes, they need to be primed. One of mine won't work at full capacity until the tank is full of water, even though the intake is a foot into the water! Doesn't make sense, but it does work eventually which is what counts.

Sometimes the the hole where the impeller sits gets full of mulm and will keep it from turning. In fact, all the parts of a filter (except motor, of course) need to be cleaned periodically to remove all the crap that ends up on all the surfaces. I use a toothbrush (new, never used in my mouth) to scrub things like the impeller and in the corners of the filter. I bought a set of brushes specifically for cleaning the pipes and such.

Then prime, prime, prime with tank water or dechlorinated fresh water to get it going. That just means to pour the water in the "tank" of the filter. Start out by filling it up before you plug it in. Then plug it in and see if it goes. If not then prime some more with it still plugged in. Good luck!
