Im so bad at making tanks look pretty...lol I just got a load of stuff and put it all in together... It does look a hundred times better with the backing though doesnt it?! :D And it makes the fish's colours seem brighter... weird!!!

Thanks for all the help aquascaper!! I shall post more pics soon and i will probably be asking for your help! lol

Lol Yeah!! :D Its nice to be able to get help from people who actually know what they're talking about rather than the so called 'experts' at the pet shops!!! They haven't got a clue!!

I shall know who to come to for more advice anyway! :D lol

Thank You!

Jess

Nice tank Jess :)

I go to my lfs and there are no names on teh plants so I ask and the guy goes "oh it's a..um..a fountain plant" so I ask what its real (scientific) name is and he just stares blankly. :D

At a lot of local type fish shops, you'll notice they hire a lot of young kids, but often there's 1 more experienced shop attendent who really is into the hobby. At least, there is at my lfs; one guy named ronald who's a real expert . . .

Lol! I have one good one but its quite a long drive away. The one i got the tank from today does 3 different types of plants i think. Oh, and They still say that goldfish can live in one of those one gallon bowls!! I heard one of the staff saying it to a child's parents. According to this guy these two goldfish (Fantails i believe) could live quite happily in a bowl, with no filtration for the rest of their lives.... Hmmm... lol

there is one of those at my lfs, he has a fondness for running round the store very fast carrying a stepladder so I can never catch him. :(

In fact he's a bit like a danio in that respect, only danios don't have stepladders.

LOL!! That just put such a cute image in my head!!! Loads of little danios swimming around with a ladder under their fins... They're always so busy anyway!!! Cute little things!lol

But, yeah, The place i went to today is actually a general pet shop (Pets at Home.. Lovely..lol) and yeah, they hire kids about 16 who seem to neither like nor care about the animals they're selling. I have a very good lfs though and im sure they'll be able to help me out if i take a big list of things you guys suggested!!! It'll probably be huge actually - stuff for this tank and my betta!! And ill more than likely end up bringing a couple more fish back with me... lol

I went to a local garden centre yesterday and was very surprised. I have never bought any fish from them as they are usually diseased, etc. and the staff haven't a clue but on this visit i overheard one member of staff telling a customer all about the nitrogen cycle and how they couldn't put fish in straight away, etc. :)
I thought i would test them a little  so i asked about clown loaches. The first thing this girl said was "have you ever kept them before?", then she asked what size tank, how long had it been going, etc. I told her it was for a 56g that was fully cycled (little white lie) and so she started to tell me a bit about them, what size they grow to and also that they are really suseptible (sp?) to Ich. Having said that she looked in the tank and noticed a tiny white spot on one of them (i had trouble seeing it) and then refused to sell me any (not that i really wanted any at that time) as the whole tank could possibly be infected and would need treated.

Why can't all staff be like her?

(Sorry to hi-jack the thread :*) )

I went to pets at home the other day and there was a LOACH in their plant tank?! could this have been intended? Also the girl spent 10 mins looking at a plant pot to see if she could magically guess how much it was. bless.

Ok, i know this is technically not that much too do with this thread but as we're complaining about staff and fish places it'll do.

I went to a pet shop which sells tropical and marine fish. Its technically my local one as its closest to me but i NEVER use it cos i dont like the guy who owns it! :D lol

Anyway, i just wanted to know if he had any cories to go in my betta tank with Arnie my male betta (Pics in another thread http://www.fishforums.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=51078 ) and i was told that i could not keep cories with a betta, and that it would have to be filtered (which may be true, i dunno...???) and he said the only fish that could go with my betta in that tank (3 gals remember) was a couple of goldfish!!!!

Now, im not expert, but even i know that 1. Goldfish and tropical fish do not go together, and 2. The Goldfish would way outgrow my tank and id be stuck with no where to put them!!

That kind of annoyed me...lol I hate it when people claim to be 'experts' but clearly have no idea!! He must have thought i was stupid!!! I Will definately not be going there again....

Anyway, just thought id share my little rant with you!lol

Jess

Haha :D ....actually i guess its not funny, thnk of the people who don't know any better who will take his advice. :(

You can keep cories with a betta, but it would have to be filtered.

Yeah, and his poor fish :( I noticed a lot of them had what looked like fungus... Not nice!!!

I guess ill either have to buy a filter for my tank or leave my betta on his own!!! Shall see how much money i have! :D

My friend (she of teatowel fame ;) ) has a betta and some panda cories in a tank with a fluval 1 filter. her tank's 8 gallons though, two would be a bit small for a whole shcool of cories I guess. :dunno:

My LFS has an 8" clown loach in the plant tank to eat all the snails :)
Scared the cack out of me when i put my face to the glass to read a plant label and out pops a loach
