I take it you have to cycle your tank before you put live rock in?

No, you put the live rock in and then you let it cycle itself. if you cycle then put your LR in, it will cause an ammonia spike.

edit: Would it cause an ammonia spike if you add half the live rock in before the cycle and half of it after?

it depends on how cured it is. I got live rock from an established system (another reefers tank) it was out of the water for a total of 3 hours. My ammonia got up to 1.0. And it was 100% cured before i got it garunteed. So its really hard to find real "fully cured" live rock since it becomes semi-cured after a couple of hours.
