What is the usual length? I know 12 inches is possible, but isn't around 7 inches the usual?
I'd get them at 2-3 inches, how long would it take them to become full grown?
I should get at least 3, right?

They should get to around 8inches if not more
As for how many it depends on your tank size,

I think I'll go with 3 because i'm not sure I'll have the space for 4-5. how many years would it take for them to become full grown?

if you cant get a group of 5 plus dont get them
What size tank do you have now cos they can grow 4-5" in the first year so thats 25 inches of stocking - 25 gallons of tank used in 1 year

i hope they wont be in the same tank as goldfish cos the goldfish couldnt stand the high temps needed

Nope, not in the same tank as goldfish. I have a 55 I've been debating about what I want to use for, so i could use that for when they're smaller. They only grow 4-5 inches in the first year? Cool, I expected them to grow faster than that.

as long as your going to get a bigger tank , then get a nice group of 5 or 6 for that tank
remember though if you're not going to be able to get a big tank then dont buy them cos they are really hard to rehome when they have grown bigger

good luck Sarah x

people snatch big clowns out of your hands these days as they take so long to grow... :)

as for growth rates they are hard to say some grow for a few months then slow right down, some grow so slow you just dont notice. really unpredictable fish, thats why they are my favourite.
