I went to a well known lfs today for some supplies.I was stood looking at the fish as you have to whenever you go in fish stores  and watching this guy selecting some fish.To be honest i was being nosey when i saw how many fish he was getting...15 in all ,not all small ones either.Listening to him talk to the assistant he said why do you limmit the amount of fish you can buy in one go? i cant understand it he said to the lady serving him .Her reply was that its so the water chemistry does not alter too much, his reply was "well i went to a different store yester day and baught 40 fish and dumped them into my tank and they are all still ok" :S I just stood there with me mouth open not believing what he had just said and expecting the assistant to put him right and refuse to sell him the fish but she said nothing and just carried on getting his fish.
I asked her about what hed said and all she said was "i know its awfull some people just dont care do they"So there i stood with me mouth hung open in disbelief again,i just left the shop in shock. :-(

So... why didn't she refuse to sell him fish. I would have!
Thats what shocked me too thats why i left without buying nothing, they dont seem to care some people as long as they sell the fish.I know not all the sales people are bad but many dont seem interested its just a job....(which imo should be left to those who know what they are doing) :(

Maybe she would of got into trouble with her boss if she didn't make the sale-15 fish is quite a lot for a small company.

I am not saying i agree or disagree but
1- how did you know what he is saying is true?
2- how do you know what size his tank is?
3- how do you know he can't support that many fish?
4- he could have more than one tank
5- these could be a gift for someone else

all in all i am just saying we don't really know and what he buys is his business.

Very true, but we don't know because the lfs employee didn't ask. Which IMO is her job :/

Her job is to sell fish not to ask all those questions. Its about the dollar nothing more. If her employer enforced that rule I am sure she wouldnt have sold. Who is she to tell him he cannot buy fish.

We know better, but you cant stop business

i completely agree, but i wouldnt want someone saying to me "no you cant buy any fish here you have to many"

It's true that he might have had more tanks or what not, or maybe he was just screwing with her like I've known some people in here to do ;) but what if these employees who don't know much fish stuff start refusing to sell fish based on crap info they think is right? I don't want to get into an argument for twenty minutes because they say a betta can't be put in a community tank at all because it will kill everything, but I can buy an oscar for in it. (a bit on the dramatic side but you get my drift) And even if she had said something who's to say he wouldn't lie anyways? It's impossible to make sure that everything is okay without having to get 'fish police' on the case. Damned if you do and damned if you don't in my opinion -_-

  for that reson, the " i donk care pick your fish and leave " attituide at petco and/or petsmart cause they don't care about the wellbeing of the fish IN THE STORE let alone give much of a crap how they are cared for in your home tank thats why i 99% of the time go to a privet owned lfs which hase much cooler much heather and a bigger selection then the cookie cutter petco and/or petsmart and another thing that gets me all spun up is how come at the lps it's fine for them to house 50 or so fish in the same tank ....but will ask qustions if you are buying over 7 fish? like myself when i started my tank wanted to get 4 jumbo neons 4 glow lights a synodontis catfish and two fancy guppies they gave me a long speech about over croweding not listening to the fact that the tank is a 55 gal  sorry i normaly don't express my self that often .... but this is a subject that really gets me going :fun:

thanks for letting my wast some of your time :p

Yeah. It is a part of the employees job. Not ours. Now, while I agree that maybe 15 fish at once is excessive and an all around bad idea, but we have no idea what the actual facts are. It never ceases to amaze me that some people are so "appalled" by things like this. We here have a little (or a lot) of information. Now that we do, some of us get very "high and mighty" about the mistakes other people make. Of course we forget that when we started we probably made many of the same mistakes. I know I made plenty of mistakes when I started. And I would have continued if not for the polite, constructive help of other people. Both online and in the stores. I can assure you if I got a bunch of "I am appalled" crap, I would not have learned anything. Instread of reactions like this, perhaps (since we weren't minding our own business anyhow) we could have taken a few minutes to talk with the person buying the fish and trying to first get the facts and then trying to help the person.

Regarding the anti-PetCo and PetSmart comments. Not all of them are "evil". One of the PetSmarts near me was very good about their fish. They looked great in the store, the people I dealt with were very helpful and knowledgeable. I bought two fish at PetSmart. They are still alive and well over 1.5 years and about 50 surviving fry later.

i completly agree

well i got to say i work for a lfs that only wants money but i refuse to sell anyone fish till i know they are going to a good home..
i have refused fish 3 times this week because someone came in a got a fish tank to set up at the same time and wanted fish.. so , if this person cares then she would not have sold him fish until she new the facts..
i ask all of the ones that i can .
1. what size tank do you have
2. how long has it been up and running.
3. have you tested the water and if not bring some water to me i will test it for you.
4. do you have other fish in it
5. even sometimes ask who and where is it set up.
like you know is it for a kid or an office..
these are things i ask and sometimes other things if i think of it..
before i sell anyone anything..
