Could Someone Please Confirm This Fish Please

Can you upload the photo to a hosting site like Photobucket and add the photo? I don't download files because of the fear of viruses (most others won't ether). We can't help until we can see it.

OK I downloaded the file, although I didnt really want to, you should have used Photobucket or similar for posting images.
But that said
it is Phractocephalus hemioliopterus.
Should only be kept by large public aquariums due to its immense size. LFS sometimes sell 4-6" juveniles for around 70 GBP. not a wise buy

I'll get rid of that and the two bala's then, that lfs is an absolute joke. I even told them i have a 200 litre tank, they said it would be fine!!!!

Many stores will say anything to get a sale so it is always best to find out information about fish before buying them. It is one of the things that really spoil this hobby that there is nothing to regulate who can buy what fish or who can sell them, ideally there needs to be some kind of owner licensing scheme for fish with larger than average adult sizes.

I agree, i have a 200 litre tank, as i think i stated earlier. The fish will grow longer than my tank!! Done a little research and it looks like it will eat my fish, the rainbow shark is scared to death of it, so i have had to seperate them off as the rainbow keeps trying to fight it.

The LFS has said they won't take it back because they do not have the means to look after a fish that will grow that big, so they knew what they were doning when they sold it too me.

Would a proffesional tropical store take it off my hands?

Most likely not, best bet is a public aquarium or zoo exibit.
Best of luck.
I agree with CFC 100% this type of thing has dogged this hobby for far to long now. We have bodies in place now like CITES and DEFRA who if we're not careful in self managment practices will shut many parts of the aquarium trade down. This type of practice is playing right into their hands.
Some sort of Owner Licensing Scheme seems to be the only way forward.

What?! How long ago did u buy it from them? (So, they had the means to keep it up until whenever you got it>T*%*$)

(Don't suppose there is a 'Blue Reef Aquarium' nearby- Public Display Place?)

Its not the fishes fault......I do wish people would just take the time to research a little bit more into what they are buying from their LFS. Baby Phractocephalus hemioliopterus do look very appealing and I must admit I have a soft spot for them, but alas reality kicks in and it's a great big NO NO. This fish is probably the most common tankbuster to don dealers tanks as they do look so cute when young. More homework required by aquarist/s in general would mean that LFS stocking such species would not be commercially viable.
That fish is more than likely facing death, if not rehomed in a large public aquarium and even they may be inundated with similar plights. I sincerely hope you do manage to rehome it, at least for the fishes sake.

I agree totally with Bigc. I dont want to upset the owner but really before purchasing any fish you should investigate everything about the fish before purchasing-Its the same with anything you are purchasing-car -house etc but in this case this is a living object. I feel so sorry for this fish and this story saddens me . A bit of homework and people realizing this fish isnt suitable and maybe the lfs would have realized the mistake they had made by not being able to sell it.

Just so as everyone gets the picture

i have managed to re home iy, it's a guy that has a 60ft heated pond! Winner :good:

I don't think it's a 100% pure redtail, the nose looks a little too long and the eyes are too large. Seen baby redtails before and it doesn't look exactly the same.

It looks very similar to some redtail x shovelnose catfish that Swallow Aquatics in East Harling had in. Both parent species are large fish so who knows what these little guys could max out at, they may have hybrid vigour and grow larger than both parents! They have been coming in from the Far East recently.

I would follow the advice of the other guys and take back to shop or see if anyone out there can house him.
